Bell Ringer Answer • Technology has allowed consumers to skip advertising. • Technology has also helped advertisers reach customers in new ways, such as by cell phones.

Learning Objectives • Define Publicity. • Explain its role in creating a positive public image. • Describe various types of sales promotions.
Publicity • Publicity is free, but the message is not controlled by the business. • It is controlled by the news media and others that are presenting the message.
Goodwill • Publicity can be advantageous to a sports or entertainment businesses by creating goodwill. • Customers’ positive feelings about the business.
Damage Control • When a sports figure is arrested, the information is printed in the newspaper, covered on TV, and posts and discussed on the Internet. • The player and the team’s publicist must provide damage control, by refuting, justifying, or downplaying the circulating stories and focusing the attention on more positive matters. • It is much less damaging to admit a mistake and move on to more positive news.
Grass-Roots Publicity • When an unknown person or event is propelled into the spotlight by the fans, it is referred to as a grass-roots effort.
Viral Campaign • A viral campaign is a promotion where a few online mentions turn into a real buzz about a movie and propel it into a mega hit.
Image is Everything • PR focus on the future with the intent of creating a positive image of the business. • A comprehensive strategy for developing a good PR will include a definition of the image the company/person desires and what needs to be done to attain the image.

Sales Promotions • Sales promotions are marketing efforts that offer the customer an additional incentive to buy the product, or service. • Sales promotions can have an immediate positive influence on sales, changing reluctant potential customers into buyers.
Consumer Sales Promotions • Temporary price reductions, such as half-price tickets. • Price-pack deals, such as four ballgame tickets, drinks, and hot dogs packaged together at a special price. • Coupons offering a special price • Special gifts, such as posters or team hand towels that are given out to the first 500 people • Contests or games that offer prizes to customers • Rebates that refund part of the purchase price
