  3. SMOKE! The Issue: People fail to maximize their appliance’s burning potential! • Burning wet wood • Damping the stove down too soon • Not cleaning the appliance or chimney often enough • Using inefficient woodstoves!!

  4. Why is Wood Smoke a Problem? • ResidentialWood smoke is concentrated where we live. • All it takes is one ‘bad’ stove in the neighbourhood • Our valley communities are susceptible to winter inversions.

  5. Houston Hotspots Gail Millar’s Mobile Air Monitoring Spatial Mapping demonstrated the variation in neighbourhood air quality. Residential home heating is the main source of these winter emissions

  6. Woodstove Exchange Program • Skeena - BVLD launched as Provincial Pilot in Nov. 2006 • Community Based • BVLDAMS to manage • Goal of 400+ Exchanges (10%)

  7. There is a Difference! Technology continues to improve. Emission-Certified stoves are capable of: • Burning 1/3 Less Wood • Reducing Emissions by up to 90% • Reducing creosote build-up and risk of chimney fire

Program Strategy • Increase barriers for inaction • local bylaws • House insurance and higher rates of chimney fire • Awareness of emissions & negative health impacts Increase incentives for action • Rebates and savings • Efficiency savings: Use less wood • Be a Good Neighbour • Safety of home and family

Bylaws • Guide and hasten change with local bylaws • Smithers, Houston, Burns Lake, Terrace... • New installs MUST meet EPA standard • Mandatory vs. Target removal deadlines • Removal or Exchange prior to sale of home • Burning restrictions during AQ Advisories • Fuel restrictions: no garbage, firewood must be seasoned

  10. Increase Rebates for Residents Cost is # 1 Barrier! $250 from AMS $150-$300 during March/April $50 – $500 from RD and Municipal Partners

  11. Recycling Old Stoves All old stoves are destroyed and recycled Storage until pick-up at secure Works Yard or deliver straight to scrap metal dealer

  12. Outreach and Education • Woodstove Demonstration Trailer at Tradeshows, Fairs and other community events • Burn-it-Smart Workshops

  13. 630 Exchanges and Counting! Thanks to Mike and team at UBC

That's 630 old smoky wood stoves removed from our airsheds: a potential reduction of nearly 60 tonnes of PM2.5 per year and an estimated annual savings of over 1000 cords of firewood – more than 80 logging truck loads! But... Only 30 Rebates Remain! Program funding has decreased annually and is uncertain...

  15. Lessons and Future Directions... Upgrading the appliance is only part of the solution... Perhaps even more important are proper burning habits and DRY FIREWOOD!
