  2. Memory Example • On the first page of your packet, name the seven dwarves • REMEMBER: To accurately demonstrate your memory, no cheating or comparing!

  3. Reflection Questions • Was this exercise easy or difficult? • Why do you think that? The difficulty depends on some factors: • If you saw the movie • If you like Disney movies • How many times you watched the movie • How recently you watched the movie

  4. MEMORY Definition: The persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information

  5. Three Parts of Memory • Encoding • Storage • Retrieval

  6. ENCODING • Getting information into the brain/processing information Example: Meet a girl you don’t know at a party and learn her name.

  7. STORAGE • The retention of encoded information over time Example: Trying to remember her name as you leave the party.

  8. RETRIEVAL • The process of getting the information out of your stored memory. Example: Seeing her the next day and calling her the right name!

  13. Encoding • 1st stage of the memory process • Encoding: Getting information into the brain/processing information • Three types: semantic/acoustic/visual

  14. Semantic • Definition: the meaning of something is encoded • Example: mnemonic devices • OTTFFSSENT is hard to remember but giving it a meaning makes it easier • One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten

  15. Acoustic • Definition: encoding the sound of the information (repeating sound or rhymes) • Example: memorizing lines of Romeo & Juliet • Repeat lines each 27 times • The sound is repeated over and over and you develop a rhythm

  16. Visual • Definition: encode information as an image • Example: the water cycle • Reading about it is difficult to remember but seeing the diagram and picturing the cycle in movement with images make it easier to remember
