  1. Today we will represent fractions on a number line . • identify- locate; find • represent- draw and label • fraction - represents part of a whole or part of set; top number is the numerator, bottom number is the denominator. Concept

  2. 3 4 fraction a number that shows part of a whole or part of a set Part of a whole = The denominator, the number on the bottom, gives the total number of parts. The numerator, the number on the top, gives the number of parts being used. Three out of a total of four squares are blue. Three fourths of the box is blue. APK

  3. 3 4 fraction Part of a set Three out of four boxes are blue. APK

  4. 20 100 fraction Twenty out of 100 boxes are blue. APK

  7. Why is it important that we can represent fractions on a number line? • Being able to represent fractions on a number line helps visualize, or see, the answer to a problem. • Number lines in math are like graphic organizers in writing, they help us organize our information. • Number lines help us compare and order numbers. What are other reasons why it is important we can represent fractions on a number line? IMP

  8. Comparing and Ordering Numbers • When we compare we use terms such as: • Less than < • Greater than > • Equal to = • Comparing fractions is similar to comparing whole numbers. • 45<47 • 150>105 • When we compare fractions we look at the denominators first, if they are the same we look at the numerator.

  9. 10 1 3 2 4 5 6 8 7 1 2 3 9 4 5 6 6 Label on this number line as point A. 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 0 1 Representing fractions on a number line. • Step 1: Determine the value for each segment on a number line. • The denominator represents the total number of segments between whole numbers. If your denominator does not match your number line you must convert the fraction accordingly. • Step 2: Beginning at the appropriate whole number, count the number of segments between the whole number and the point you are trying to locate. • Step 3: Draw a point on the number line and label it appropriately. • Remember the denominator represents the total number of segments, the numerator represents the number of segments you are using. 12. Guided Practice If you have questions this is the time to ask. PLEASE ask questions. This is your Guided Practice. We will work on this together. Please do NOT go ahead.

  13. On your dry erase boards, draw a number line and label . 1 1 4 4 1 0 Let’s review what we learned about representing fractions on a number line. A picture of a line where each point represents a real number and each number a point. What is a number line? Determine the value of each segment and then count the number of segments being used. How do you locate a point on a number line?

  14. Independent Practice This your Independent Practice. You must complete all of the problems without assistance. You must SHOW ALL your work. Take your time. Work slowly and carefully. When you finish you flip your paper over and you made read quietly until everyone is done. Good Luck.
