  1. Today we will understand that fractions have equivalents Equivalent=the same or equal

  2. Equivalent Fractions • Name the same amount but have different numerators and denominators. 1 2 1 1 = 4 2 4 2 1 4

  3. Equivalent Fractions • Are sometimes called equal fractions: two or more fractions that name the same number. 1 2 1 1 = 4 2 4 2 1 4

  9. So how can we relate this to dollars and cents? If this was a dollar, how much would each ¼ equal? So each ¼ is equal to 25/100 Great! ¼ is equivalent to 25/100! .25 .25 Why is this true? If we take a dollar, which has 100 pennies and divide it by the denominator (which is 4), then we would end up with 25. That’s 25 pennies! .25 .25

  10. So how can we relate this to dollars and cents? If this was a dollar, how much would each ½ equal? So each ½ is equal to 50/100 Great! ½ is equivalent to 50/100! .50 Why is this true? If we take a dollar, which has 100 pennies and divide it by the denominator (which is 2), then we would end up with 50. That’s 50 pennies! .50

  11. Why is this important? • Sometimes on a test, you won’t see your answer, even though it’s right! It will be an equivalent fraction! • You will know how to make simpler fractions to work with instead of big numbers! • Can you think of any other reasons?

  12. How do we make equivalent fractions? • Check to see if both numbers divide by the same number evenly • If they do, divide by that number in the numerator AND denominator • If not, chose a number to multiply by and multiply the numerator and denominator by that number
