  1. Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD)Current State Process forOrdering and Updating Laura Davenport Cartographer/National WBD Technical Support Team USDA-NRCS National Cartography and Geospatial Center (NCGC), Fort Worth, Texas

  2. Highlights: • NCGC WBD Responsibilities • Gateway Data Ordering • In-State WBD Re-Submittal Options

  3. NCGC WBD Responsibilities * Assist USGS with National Technical Review and to ensure the integrity of the certified WBD* SDE Geodatabase integration of National layers of Watershed Boundary certified data and updates submitted by in-state data stewards* Serve data online via the Geospatial Data Gateway; http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov* Data Storage and Archiving

  4. http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov

  5. WBD Data Ordering By State: order defaults to delivery by one shapefile for Area of Interest. By County: order defaults to delivery by separate individual sub-basins but can be overridden in Step 3 to one shapefile delivered by Area of Interest. Define Order Area: use a Bounding Box to define Area of Interest; defaults to delivery by separate individual sub-basins but can be overridden in Step 3 to one shapefile delivered by Area of Interest.

  6. Data is delivered for free via ftp download. Fees are assessed for deliveries on CDROM or DVD to the public and non-USDA entities.

  7. Ordering Seamless National Layers for Lower 48:

  8. Future Gateway Direction for WBD • Currently, the Gateway delivers only shapefiles. • Geodatabase deliveries will be implemented in the future. • The HUC250K layer will be retired and archived. • WBDHU8: A new “unofficial” 8 digit HUC layer at 1:24,000 scale has been created by NCGC for download to replace the HUC250K 8 digit layer.

  9. State Updates to WBD Contact In-state Data Stewards to request/suggest updates: http://www.ncgc.nrcs.usda.gov/products/datasets/watershed/coordinators.html Accepted Data Formats for Linework and Polygons: *ArcInfo Coverage (Cleaned and Built) or * ArcGIS Personal or File Based Geodatabase (Topology Rules Applied); ask NCGC for topology.rul file that includes these rules for error correction:

  10. State WBD Resubmission Whether Resubmitting the Entire State or only a Portion of the State: * Submit ALL linework with polygons after a topology check * Proper Projection Information: Geographic, NAD 83 (contactNCGC for .prj file) Data may require conversion to another projection for editing, but does need to be converted back to Geographic, NAD 83 for resubmission. * Ensure “ACRES” field is up to date and rounded to nearest whole number. * Updated metadata and associated “META_ID” fields in both polygons and linework * Conduct full coordination with border states throughout the edit process * Let NCGC know edge match plan if submitting polygons that overlap into bordering state(s); whether new polygons replace (preferred method) existing polygons in SDE version or to do a clip to state boundary and merge polygons at borders.

  11. Updates: Alternative to Downloading • In-State WBD Stewards can contact me at laura.davenport@ftw.usda.gov to obtain a “Check-Out” of their data to edit instead of downloading from the Gateway and converting to a geodatabase or an ArcInfo Coverage. • Conditions that apply to editing a check-out: * Do not edit the outer perimeter of checked-out extent * Do not change the structure of the checked-out geodatabase (naming, layer structure, etc.) * Editing would need to be done in Geographic. Add data source to ArcMap first and let WBD reproject on the fly. * Editor of the Check-Out must be using the same version of ArcGIS from which the SDE Check-Out was derived (Currently 9.2 sp5). An exact service pack match is not necessarily required. Service Pack 6 edits have also been checking in properly to a Service Pack 5 version of the SDE database, but sp5 could have issues checking in to an sp6 SDE version. **In ANY geodatabases DO NOT use True Curves in your data. This creates problems for Shapefiles for they do not have the precision to support True Curves.**

  12. What Happens to the Data once it arrives at NCGC? Ask about “WBD SDE Geodatabase Integration and Gateway Processing”
