In this engaging activity, students will delve into the world of geometry by exploring different shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, and rhombuses. Each student will choose a shape and create multiple copies, dissecting them into smaller shapes. They will fold and cut the shapes, pasting their findings onto a large sheet of paper. This hands-on exploration fosters understanding of geometric properties and promotes visual identification of hidden shapes within larger ones.

Chart the Parts Key Question What hidden shapes can you find in these shapes? Learning Goals Students will: • divide squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, and rhombuses • Identify the smaller shapes into which these shapes can be divided
Chart the Parts Materials • Scisssors • Glue Sticks • Paper Shapes (3-4 per student) • Recording Sheets (6 per group)
Chart the Parts Each person in the group will choose a shape. You will need 4 copies of the shape you choose.
Chart the Parts • Paste an uncut shape in the top left corner of the large white paper. • Fold one of the shapes in any direction – horizontally, vertically, diagonally. • Cut on the fold line to make two other shapes. • Paste the two new shapes under the first. Repeat with the other two shapes.
Chart the Parts • What shapes were you able to find in the square? • The rectangle… • The triangle… • The rhombus… • The parallelogram… • The trapezoid….
