History of Pencils • The Pencil had been around since Ancient Egypt and Rome. • Adding wood around the graphite frame was thought of by a couple in Italy whose names were Simonio and Lyndiana Bernicotti in Italy. • Blue Prints were found of a hollow stick of Juniper wood with 2 half's glued together with a long graphite stick was inside.

Pencils in America (facts) • American Colonist imported pencils form England after the American Revolution. • Benjamin Franklin’s “Pennsylvania Gazette” in 1729, had advertisements for pencils for sale. • Pencils were only used by the upper-class at this time period because ,they were the only ones educated in how to read in right. • At the end of the 19th century over 240,000 pencils were purchased.

  4. Adding the Eraser!!!! • Hymen Lipman patented the first pencil with an eraser on March 30th 1858. • Lipman sold his patented rights to Joseph Reckendorfer in 1862 for $100,000! • In 1875 the United States Supreme Court ruled the paten invalid.

  5. Everyday Use • Think about how often you use a pencil. All of you would say at least 5 days a week. Pencils are a part of school and writing. • Artists and architects use pencils make designs and works of art.

How Pencils are made • You start out with a block of cedar (after it has been cut down from the forest and treated). • Then Cut it into slates. • Then you stain the slates (paint them/ treat) • Groves are cut into the wood to outline the pencil’s shape. • Then wholes are cut at each end of the pencil and the pencil is hallowed out to fit the graphite inside. • Then fill the empty wooden pencil shell with graphite. • Then each groove in the slate is matched with an eraser top. • Then they cut each groove into a individual pencil. • After this process it is ready to be boxed and shipped to a supply store .
