  1. Circuit Theory • Every circuit needs 3 components to function • A Source, a Path, and a Load • A SOURCE • Something to supply electromotive force, also called…? • Voltage • What sources are there?

  2. Schematic symbols • Sources are usually represented in two ways: • This is a DC source • Four lines, of alternating width. • Smaller line on the negative side • Note that this source has POLARITY or direction

  3. Schematic Symbols • The other way a source is represented is as shown below. • Two lines of differing length. • Not that there is NO polarity on this source • This is typically seen with AC sources, but it can be used with any source where the polarity is not important.

  4. Path • In order for the electrons to travel along the circuit, we need to have a path. • A path is any conductor that voltage is acting upon. • There must be a path from the source to the load, AND a path back • What do we call a circuit that doesn’t have a path back to the source or ground? • Open circuit

  5. Load • Without a load, the path has little to no resistance. • What do we call a circuit where the electricity follows the path back to ground with no resistance? • Short Circuit. • The load can be any form of resistance, as long as the voltage can overcome it • Examples are resistors, light bulbs, air, etc.
