Research Disparities Purpose Survey Texas stroke centers • Confirm stroke center status (level I, II, III) • Which accrediting organization (DNV or JC) • Dedicated stroke coordinator • Refer to/affiliated with CSC • Telestroke services • Stroke research • DSHS discharge data – stroke volume • ICD-9 code list (430-438.9) • 2013; 1st, 2nd, 3rd Quarter 2014

  3. Methods Stroke Center Response to date • Obtained list of Level I, II, III stroke centers from DSHS • Obtained contact list (coordinator name, phone number, address) from RAC • Initiated survey via phone and email • 76 completed responses; 47 pending responses • 1 refusal to participate

  4. Methods – Call Flow Ask for Stroke Coordinator (If no stroke coordinator, ask for a Quality director). Note name & call back # Call hospital main switchboard or direct line Are you a primary stroke center? Which accrediting organization? (ex. Joint commission) YES NO Are you/do you have a dedicated stroke coordinator? Do you refer to or affiliate with a Comprehensive stroke center? Does your hospital do telestroke? Is your hospital currently doing stroke research? What project(s) is/are you doing? (study names) YES Thank you, end call. Document call on Call Log. NO

In Progress Population Data • Currently mapping US Census data • Currently mapping Texas Road Network data • Analysis using ArcGIS Discharge Data • Discharge data source: DSHS • 2013; 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarter 2014 stroke discharges from state of Texas • Currently mapping stroke discharges relative to stroke centers • Assessing stroke discharge volume for non-stroke centers

  6. Possibilities Opportunities for Future Projects • Population access to stroke centers doing research • Strategic planning to invite other hubs and spokes into the network
