  2. Events Leading to War French and Indian War, American Revolution, Battle of New Orleans, The Civil War John Adams, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln. Dred Scott v. Sanford declared slaves as property and increased tension between north and south and were not intended to be included as citizens according to the Supreme Court justices. The North had a stronger manufacturing economy than the South Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin which fueled abolitionists to fight to eliminate slavery. The Fugitive Slave Law made Northern law enforcement not interested in capturing. Missouri Compromise kept the balance of free vs. slave states Henry Clay knew no east, west, north or south but preservation of the union. The Power of Nullifcation was desired for states rights, tariffs, and slavery but NOT power.
  3. The Civil War Lincoln’s primary purpose was to reunite the country South enjoyed only having to hold the ground they had rather than advancing to take new ground and the other advantage the South had was a better trained military. The income tax of 1861 was created to pay for the Civil War. Abolitionists were in support of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in states in full rebellion against the United States. The South’s disadvantage was their lack of industries General Lee surrendered to General Grant Vicksburg gave control of the Mississippi to the Union Army. Robert E. Lee attended West Point, fought in the Mexican War, served as leader of Confederate troops, and surrendered at Appomattox Court House. In his Gettysburg Address Lincoln referred to democracy as “government of the people, by the people and for the people. In his second Inaugural Address, Lincoln suggested that the South should not be punished too harshly. After Grant took command of the Union army, the focus shifted to “total war”
  4. Reconstruction The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments granted civil rights to African Americans. Freedmen’s Bureau, 14th and 15th Amendments passed, and martial law established in South. Lincoln’s 10% plan offered forgiveness to Southern soldiers allow southern states back into the union.
