  2. Making and testing perfumes… Chanel No.5 Advert

  3. Perfume facts • Dogs can detect the difference in smell between non-identical twins but not between identical twins. • Your sense of smell is nowhere near as good as an average moth’s. Some male moths can detect a female’s scent up to 11 km away. • One of the key scents in many male aftershaves is musk, which was originally extracted from glands on the male musk deer. • In May 1921, when the perfume creator Ernest Beaux presented her with a choice of fragrances, Gabrielle Chanel barely hesitated before choosing the fifth one, which was to become CHANEL N°5.

  4. What’s in a perfume? 10 August 2014 MUST know the properties a perfume needs SHOULD explain how we smell COULD Explain volatility using the kinetic theory

  5. Why does a perfume need these properties? • Volatile (evaporates easily) • Non-toxic • Does not dissolve in water • Does not irritate the skin

  6. Diffusion animation 1

  7. Diffusion The “scent particles” from this hamburger are in high concentration here: Eventually they will “diffuse” out into this area of low concentration: Diffusion is when something travels from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. For example, consider the scent from a hamburger…

  8. How do we smell? (sGa) particles (sueffid) up our (eson). We have (sorsenss) in our noses. A signal is then sent to our (niabr).

  9. Volatility • A liquid is said to be volatile if it evaporates easily. • Why might this be the case? • Which is most volatile, petrol or water?

  10. Making an ester • Alcohol + carboxylic acid ester + water • Butanol + ethanoic acid butylethanoate + water

  11. Keywords
