  1. Isolation of Lead chromate: “Paint Lab”Pre-Lab due before class on lab day! qualitative vs. quantitative? “Analyze solnof silver nitrate and lead nitrate” Silver nitrate: AgNO3 (Is it soluble in water? Ch.5, solubility table ) Silver Nitrate dissolved in water: AgNO3 (s) +H2O(l) Ag+(aq)+ NO3-(aq) + H2O(l) Lead nitrate : Pb(NO3)2(Is it soluble in water?) lead nitrate dissolved in water: Pb(NO3) 2 (s) + H2O(l) Pb+2 (aq)+ 2NO3-(aq)+ H2O (l)

  2. Ag+ Pb+2 NO3- NO3- NO3- Original solnof AgNO3(aq)& Pb(NO3)2(aq) (step 2) Add sodium chloride soln(step 4) (NaCl(s)+ H2O(l) Na+(aq)+ Cl-(aq) +H2O(l)) ** to form a solid (precipitate) silver chloride: AgCl (s) You will isolate AgCl (s) via “filtration” (step 6) Ag+ Pb+2 AgCl(s) Pb+2 NO3- NO3- NO3- NO3- NO3- NO3- Cl- Na+ Na+

  3. Na+ Pb+2 NO3- NO3- NO3- Now solution (filtrate) contains Pb(NO3)2(aq) You will add aqueous soln of Potassium chromate (step 11). K2 CrO 4 (aq)2K+ + CrO4-2 **to form a solid (precipitate) lead chromate PbCrO4 (s) Isolate PbCrO4(s) via “filtration”(step 12). This is the “Paint”! Na+ Na+ NO3- K+ K+ NO3- Pb+2 K+ K+ NO3- CrO4-2 NO3- NO3- PbCrO 4 (s) NO3-

  4. Lab Write Up Must include: • ** Precipitation Reaction Equations (refer to Ch. 5) • (steps 4 and 11) • Data Table (Observations) • Post-Lab Questions • Lead chromate painting • Lab Reports Due: • Period 3: Fri. April 11 • Period 4: Wed. April 9

  5. Solubility Rules (Ch. 5) • Soluble Compounds: • Nitrates, Acetates, Perchlorates • Group IA metal salts, Ammonium Salts • Mostly Soluble: • Chlorides, Bromides, and Iodides (except Pb, Ag, Hg) • Sulfates (except Sr, Ba, Pb, Hg; CaSO4 is slightly sol) • Mostly Insoluble: • Carbonates, hydroxides, phosphates, and sulfides except for ammonium and Group IA metals • Hydroxides and Sulfides of Ca, Sr, and Ba are moderately soluble Silver nitrate AgNO3 lead nitrate Pb(NO3) 2

  6. Silver nitrate AgNO3 lead nitrate Pb(NO3) 2
