  4. Old Santa Fe • Was a route through central North America that served as a vital commercial and military highway until the introduction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880.

  5. California Trail • Also known as the emigrant trail of about 2,000 miles that stretched across the western half of the North American.

  6. Mormon Trail • Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believed they were following God’s will by coming West and settling in the Great Basin

  7. Oregon Trail • Route that stretched about 2,000 miles from Independent Missouri, to Columbia River in Oregon • Very difficult • Rocky Mountains • Missionaries

  8. Life on the Trail • Difficult • Many Children died falling off wagons • People falling and getting run over by animals • Sickness and disease • Starvation • Freezing to death • Usually on the trail for 4 to 6 months
