  2. WHAT ARE MOCK INTERVIEWS? Mock Interviews, also known as practice interviews, are simulations for actual interviews. Typically take place with a professional career counselor or volunteer professionals from various industries They provide you with tools for: • Answering difficult questions • Developing interview strategies • Improving communication skills • Reducing stress prior to an interview

WORKFORCE STATISTICS As of November 2018 there were 6.9 million job openings in the U.S. (U.S. Labor and Statistics, 2018) • only 5.7 million were filled 98% of job applicants are removed from consideration based on their resume and cover letter (Forbes survey, 2017) • Unqualified • Formatting • Didn’t follow directions The youth labor force (16-24) grows an average of 8% annually and 12% during the summer months • Summer employment • HS graduates entering workforce • College graduates entering workforce

EDUCATION AND THE WORKFORCE Estimated 55 million job openings in the economy through 2024; 24 million from new jobs and 31 million due to baby boomer retirement • 35% of the job openings will require at least a bachelor’s degree • 30% will require some college attainment or an associate’s degree; • 36% won’t require more than a high school diploma STEM, Healthcare Professionals, Healthcare Support, and Community Services Professions will be the fastest growing occupations • Will also require high levels of college education (including advanced degrees) Data taken from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce

PBS-HSA MOCK INTERVIEWS Who: Only for 11th grade students What: Recruit volunteers from different fields including education, health services, business, etc. will be here to help you practice interviewing When: March 8, 2019 9am-12pm Structure: • Each interviewer is assigned a group of students • Interviewers receive student resume and cover letter in advance • Each interview lasts for approximately 10 minutes (7 mins core, 3 mins feedback) • Scored on a rubric for resume, cover letter, and interview skills Worth 25% of your homeroom grade!

  12. IN-CLASS PREPARATION Students will prepare their resume and cover letter in homeroom. Resumes should be prepared using Naviance and cover letters should be prepared using google docs. It is important that you attend homeroom each day. Tardiness and/or absences may cause you to miss vital information related to mock interviews.

  13. OUT OF CLASS PREPARATION Workshops with Ms. Taylor Every Monday and Wednesday Feb. 11th-March 1st Room 204 During Lunch

  14. Due Dates All materials (resume and cover letter) are due to Ms. Taylor by February 25th. You must save your final resume in Naviance. You must email your final cover letter to Ms. Taylor (more information provided later)

  15. POP QUIZ What is the initial amount of time an employer takes to review an applicant’s resume? • Answer: • 10-15 seconds minimum • 45 seconds maximum

  18. THE HEADER What should be included? • Name • Permanent and present address • E-mail address • Telephone number Where should contact information go? • Top of the page

  19. OBJECTIVE STATEMENT Purpose • Communicate the type of position you are interested in Example • Reliable, respectful, and mature high school senior seeking a challenging position as a customer service representative in a local store setting.

  20. EDUCATION Name of Institution • Include city and state (if not part of the title) Name of your degree and major • HS Diploma List degrees in reverse chronological order • Most recent degree is listed first

  21. EDUCATION Date or expected date of graduation • Graduation Date: May 2014 • Expected Graduation Date: May 2015 GPA • Only include GPA if it’s at least a .0 • Round down to the nearest tenth • 3.0 not 3.062 • GPA: 4.0

  22. EXPERIENCE Use the term "experience" • What is considered experience? • Full and part-time jobs • Self-employment • Volunteer and internship opportunities • Information to include • Job Title • Dates of employment • Company name • City & State

LISTING RESPONSIBILITIES Use bullet points Start of each line with an action verb • Present tense if currently employed • Past tense if no longer employed • Vary your choice of verbs Tailor skills and experiences to the position for which you are applying Be concise while providing enough detail

  26. RESUME DO’S Use action verbs Use short, concise sentences Keep resume easy to read Keep resume about one page Include references or “References Available Upon Request”

  27. RESUME DON’TS Do not use the pronouns such as I, me, my, etc. Do not clutter your resume with nonessential information Do not make any misrepresentations Do not include personal information • SSN, age, sex, height, weight, marital status, photograph, etc.
