  2. Structure of the Perineum • Skin covered muscular region between the vagina and the anus. • Diamond-shaped between the thighs

  3. Function of the Perineum • Prevents involuntary seepage from the rectum (keeps feces inside colon) • Can be torn during childbirth.

  4. Episiotomy = Cutting of Perineum

Structure of Uterus • Pear-shaped organ 3” long, 2” wide, 1” thick that acts as a womb • Located between bladder and rectum • Ligaments hold it in place • Made up of 3 layers • Endometrium – mucous membrane that has large blood supply; where zygote attaches • Myometrium – thick layer of muscle to support uterus and propel baby out • Periotoneum – layer furthest from baby

  6. Function of the Uterus • Permits sperm to move toward the fallopian tubes for fertilization • Provides nutrients to embryo until placenta is formed • Contracts to push baby out during labor

  8. Prolapsed Uterus • Ligaments and muscles holding the uterus in place get weak • Uterus moves and exits the vagina
