  2. Nouns • A noun is a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing or idea • Examples: • Persons: Sharon, Major Brown, hairstylist • Places: Iowa, districts, Mars, library • Things: Great Pyramid, toothpicks, merry-go-round • Ideas: peace, truth, excellence, beauty

  3. Common vs. Proper • Proper Nouns—names a particular person, place, thing or idea and is capitalized • Examples: President Obama, St. Louis, Thursday • Common Nouns—names anyone as a group of persons, places, things or ideas and is not capitalized • Examples: leader, city, day • Practice—Exercise 1 Pg. 375

  4. Concrete vs. Abstract • Concrete Noun—names a person, place or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses (seen, heard, tasted, touched or smelled) • Examples: cloud, poison ivy, thunder, silk, yogurt, Sarah • Abstract Noun—names an idea, a feeling, a quality or a characteristic • Examples: freedom, well-being, kindness

  5. Compound Nouns • Consists of two or more words used together as a single noun • The parts can be written as: • One word (firefighter, Iceland, newspaper) • Separate words (prime minister, Red River Dam, fire drill) • Hyphenated words (sister-in-law, pull-up) • Practice—Exercise 3 Pg. 377

  6. Collective Nouns • A word that names a group • Examples: • People: audience, chorus, committee, crew • Animals: brood, flock, gaggle, herd • Things: assortment, batch, bundle, cluster

  7. Noun Practice • Complete Exercise 4 on Pg. 378
