  13. McCarthy Machine Shop Changes are coming to the McCarthy shop

  14. McCarthy Machine Shop Changes are coming to the McCarthy shop You will need to have a TA with you to work in the machine shop area of McCarthy. I’ve hired Manrique Rivas to work with Hong They will make a schedule

  15. Safety In the assignments you will need to refine the safety documents from last semester. Then you must follow your safety protocols and all University rules

  16. Safety In the assignments you will need to refine the safety documents from last semester. Then you must follow your safety protocols and all University rules No Exceptions

  17. Safety In the assignments you will need to refine the safety documents from last semester. The reason is that I really don’t want to see anyone injured, machinery is dangerous. Taken from www.tampabilliards.com/shopsafety.html

Hong, Manrique and I will cut a new sacrificial table and secure it to the mobile table Material must be screwed down to the sacrificial table Taken from facilitysigns.wordpress.com

  20. Eye Safety Certified safety glasses are required Taken from facilitysigns.wordpress.com

  21. Eye Safety Certified safety glasses are required If you have a prescription you must work with me to find something that work for you Taken from facilitysigns.wordpress.com Taken from www.northernsafety.com

  22. Propeller Safety You MUST wear leather work gloves You MUST use at servo for the throttle control You MUST wear safety glasses You MUST NOT stand in the plane of the spinning prop You MUST NOT run any engine inside a building

  23. Most Important Things There is not much time I only want you to do work that advances your project. Math is a must. But math and theory will get your plane off the ground. You absolutely must make design decisions based on theory and be able to talk and write about that theory in a sophisticated way The plane you build be the plane in your design Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

  24. Most Important Things There is not much time I only want you to do work that advances your project. Engineering requirements and constraints are a must. The SAE Judges will be looking for it Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

  25. Design Please talk to Don, Ken, Hong, Manrique and me about fabrication Show sketches of ideas and be able to explain that you are trying to do Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

  26. Design Please talk to Don, Ken, Hong, Manrique and me about fabrication Show sketches of ideas and be able to explain that you are trying to do Try to simplify your design for construction Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

  27. Design Please talk to Don, Ken, Hong, Manrique and me about fabrication Show sketches of ideas and be able to explain that you are trying to do Try to simplify your design for construction Be sure you have thought through: Payload issues Mass distribution Assembly Servos Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

  29. Van Drivers Each team must have at least one CUA certified driver.

  30. Syllabus The syllabus is on the class webpage http://faculty.cua.edu/vignola/Vignola_CUA/main_page.html

  31. Thursday Thursday I will meet with each group I will ask you to show me with drawings 1) How your subsystems are held together 2) How your payload system works 3) That you are ready to start building 4) If you have a plan for purchasing components

  32. Who is your driver?

  33. Who is your driver? Travis Bickly?

  34. Who is your driver? Each team will have their paperwork submitted before end of class

  35. Who is your driver? Each team will have their paperwork submitted before end of class Today

  36. Van Certification To get van certified you need to email Andrew Wolfe You have to re-certify if your were certified last year. You have to fill out this form http://ehs.cua.edu/res/docs/CUA-Driver-Application-Summary-of-FCRA-rights-for-end-user.pdf Everything is explained at http://pryzbyla.cua.edu/eventplanning/requests/Vancert.cfm

  37. Duct tape and rubber bands Work to simplify your designs Your plane doesn’t need a door with hinges and a latch It doesn't need solid walls and shouldn’t be bigger that the stuff its carrying.

  38. Duct tape and rubber bands Work to simplify your designs Think about how difficult it will be to build

  39. Resolve Issues Between Subsystems Whatever it takes

  40. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos

  41. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos. These include Mounting and replacement

  42. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos. These include Mounting and replacement Screws not Glue

  43. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos. These include Mounting and replacement Control surface anchors and linkages

  44. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos. These include Mounting and replacement Control surface anchors and linkages Wiring

  45. Servos Please resolve all issues related to servos. These include Mounting and replacement Control surface anchors and linkages Wiring Forces needed to move control surfaces and how far they need to move

  46. Thursday Thursday I will meet with each group I will ask you to show me with drawings 1) How your subsystems are held together 2) How your payload system works 3) That you are ready to start building 4) If you have a plan for purchasing components Additional questions: Who is your van driver and have they started the process? Have you started making purchases? If not why not?

Assignment 1 Design Support • Gantt chart • Weight and drag budget • Cost budget • Parts inventory • Toolbox inventory • Safety protocols A timeline with milestones, component delivery dates, estimated dates of the completions of sub-tasks and dead line dates imposed by SAE and the syllabus. A document that lists target, design and as-build weight and location for all components on the plane.
