  10. Reading a Balance

  11. Reading a Balance

  12. Reading a Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder is an instrument used to measure small amounts of liquid. The scientists use this cylinder to measure liquid volume. There are many sizes of graduated cylinders. Some measure 1,000 milliliters (mL) or 1 liter (L). Some measure 500 milliliters (mL). Some measure only in milliliters (mL). The lines on the graduated cylinder are called graduations. The liquid usually curves up the side of a graduated cylinder. To achieve an accurate reading, it is important to remember to read the measurement at the lowest point or the bottom of the curve. This low point is called the meniscus.

  13. The Meniscus

  14. Read the following volumes in the graduated cylinders.

  15. Sometimes scientists need to find the volume of small, irregularly shaped solid objects. They use the graduated cylinder and the water displacement method to calculate the volume. The graduated cylinder is filled to a specific height and recorded. The object is then placed inside the graduated cylinder. The water will rise above the object. Then a second reading of the cylinder is recorded. The first reading is subtracted from the second or higher reading. The difference is the volume of the solid object in milliliters or cubic centimeters (**remember 1 mL = 1 cm3)

  16. Calculate the volume of the marbles, using the water displacement method. • What is the volume of the water in the graduated cylinder?

  17. What is the volume of the water in the graduated cylinder after five marbles were placed in it?

  18. What is the volume of the five marbles?

  19. Extra Practice – Graduated Cylinder

  20. Extra Practice - Balance
