Conventions Conventions 'Documentary' • A recording of a factual or important event commenting on the impact it has had on society. • Conventions: • > Narration > Professional Views • > Interviews > Different shot types • > Statistics > Locations • > Voice over > Script • Aims for BBC Documentary: • We therefore want ideas that stimulate strong emotions and provoke reactions from hard hitting serieslike Drugsland to gripping and thought-provoking pieces like Love and Hate Crime.' -Head of Commissioning Clare Sillery. • The genres of a BBC 3 documentary vary from Nature and the wildlifeto Crime and Justice.A range of people with different ethnicities, backgrounds a religion are represented, informing and educating the audiences on different views, events and cultures. •

  3. The BBC 3 website has a wide range of options within their menu bar, which target and represent a nationally diverse audience. The tabs provide access to short documentaries, TV programmesand articles discussing the latest news and public affairs. Documentaries are shown on the BBC 3 web page and provide a link which will take the viewer to the iplayerwhich provides access to over 15 pages of documentaries with a wide range of genres.

  5. Accessibility: Whilst watching the documentary, there are links which grant access to the other documentaries Stacey has filmed. When going onto the link, a full page is shown advertising her other documentaries and articles, a wide range varying from Mental Health, to bounty hunting, bringingforward events and problems not just from the UK but internationally.

  6. Below the documentary there is a brief overview and description, providing an insight into the documentary. A warning is shown on the screen, providing viewers the opportunity to be aware of what the documentary contains and the discomfort it may bring to some viewers stating that it contains 'upsetting scenes'. Other features are shown such as the release date, duration and the availability of the documentary.

  7. Shame in the Game: Racism in Football • The documentary begins with a black background and the faint noise of a crowd. The noise begins to increase slightly and a quote beings to fade up on the screen. The noise of the football is then drowned out by the fast pace music which matches with the pace of the montage, switching from football stadiums, crowds, football players to interviews with players who have experienced racism or have been affected by it. In between the montage and the voice over, statistics appear, providing evidence and facts about Racism within football that has been collected from BBC sports. • Voiceovers are inserted over the football montage that have been taken from news reports and other forms of media. • The opening sequence ends at 1:32 with the title of the documentary appearing. The music cuts out and the sounds of the crowd being to fade as a football player, Andre Grey, begins to speak directly to the camera. A segment of his interview is shown after the titles where the camera switches from face-on to a side angle, providing different viewpoints throughout the brief interview. • Different Media platforms are shown, presenting screenshots of Instagram comments and messages sent to football players highlighting the racism they face and the extremity of it. • Many different angles and locations are shown such as an extreme long shot of Watford Stadium with titles shown, informing the audience of the location and date as to when this event happened. • The BBC logo always remains in the top left-hand corner of the screen. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p081mk0x/sha me-in-the-game-racism-in-football

  8. Freddy Flintoff: Living with Bulimia The documentary begins with dialogue, Freddy discussing Bulimia. Below the documentary there is access to a website which contains the trailers for the documentary as wells as the credits, stating who was involved in the production etc. The dates and times of the repeat of the show can be seen at the bottom of the webpage. • Throughout the interview of Freddyseveral camera angles are shown, close- ups of his face to express the emotion as well as mid-shots of him in the chair, the viewers being able to read his body language. • Alternating shots of Freddy in the chair. • After Freddy makes his opening statement, music begins to fade in, a slow sorrowful tune to matchthe documentary. • 1 minute and 20 seconds into the documentary, the opening titles appear, the graphic code lasting for 4 seconds. • Following on from thetitles, the pace and location changes, switching to the Gym whereFreddy is seen to be working out, an energetic and fast pace action, the toneof the documentary increasing. • Another voice over begins of Freddy introducing himself whilst a montage of Freddy'scareeris shown. Clips of Top Gear are shown,a cross convergence of differentBBC platform shows, promoting their other shows. • Clips of Freedy playing cricket when he was younger also appear, providing the audience with an insight into how long he has been suffering with the disorder. • Followingfrom the footage ofthe gym an establishing wide shot of theOld Trafford Stadium appears where Freddy used to play Cricket. • The shot then switches to a side on shot of Freddy in the car driving,following a low angle wide shot of the car pulling into the car park of Old Trafford. •

TV Documentary Website Research The 'On Location' tab takes the viewers to a page that introduces the cast and crew to the viewers , explaining their role and providing them with the opportunity to tell their story and experiences of the show to the viewers. This enables both the crew and the audience to build a relationship, increasing the number of viewers. The 4 tabs at the top of the page provide access into different details of the documentary. The 'clips' tab takes the users to 6 pages of videos, each educational video covering different aspects of the world, the length varying on each from 1 minute to 5 minutes. The most recent episode of the series is presented on the home page, a link which would take the viewer to BBC 3 webpage in order to watch it. Brief description of the documentary, detailing what the show is about and informing the readers that David Attenborough is hosting and voicing the documentary. The use of cross mediaconvergence between the documentary and the website allow viewers to gain a deeper insight into 'Frozen Planet'. Further convergence can be seen between David Attenborough on Blue Planet and Frozen Planet. The familiarity of Attenborough on BBC documentaries allows regular viewers to feel welcome and at home through the comfort of the presenter. At the bottom of the page there is a link which viewers can sign up to emails from 'Frozen Planet' with updates on natural history. This inclusion allows the readers to stay educated and aware of the current situations, serving the BBC's purpose to inform and educate.

  10. The download link at the start of the website allows the viewers to download posters and docuements from the Open University to educate the viewers on Blue Planet and the environment. The convergence between the BBC and the Open University follows the BBC's purpose to inform and educate their viewers. Blue Planet is one of the BBC's most successful documentary, their website allowing the viewers to continue the enjoyment of the show after the episodes, providing access to all episodes, several minute clips, knowledge quizes and 360-degree images. One of the tabs, 'Help our oceans' takes the viewers to a page which informs them of how they can get involved and help the ocean and the creatures, stating simple tips which they can use in their daily lives to improve the ocean as well as links where they can get involved in their local organisations.
