  2. Objectives • Identify 4 early settlements in SC • Explain why the early settlements did not survive • Be able to distinguish between the Spanish and English settlements

  3. Purposes of Exploration • Adventure and fame • Gold, Silver, and other riches • Fun • Also to find shorter routes to China & India • Eventually to build plantations and businesses

  4. Explorers of SC • 1st explorer to visit SC was Francisco Gordillo in 1521 • 1st European to see SC • Gordillo visited the coastline near Winyah Bay or Myrtle Beach • Hernando de Soto visited in 1540 looking for gold • 1st European to explore interior of SC

First Settlements in SC • 1st-San Miguel de Gualdape (Spanish) • Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon – July 1526-Jan. 1527 • Near Waccamaw River - Georgetown • 1st time African slaves were brought to SC • Food ran out, Native Americans did not help • de Ayllon died in October • Slave revolt-November 1st in North America

  6. First Settlements in SC • 2nd-Charlesfort and the region Carolus (French) • Present day Parris Island, Port Royal • Jean Ribault - May 1562 • 30 men were left behind, built a boat & sailed for France

  7. First Settlements in SC • 3rd-Fort San Felipe (Spanish) • Built on Parris Island in 1566 • Captain Juan Pardo explored SC twice • Indians attacked the Fort in July 1576 and settlers left

  8. First Settlements in SC • 4th-Fort San Marcos • Spanish built it in 1577- built again on Parris Island • Grew to have 60 houses • English attacked St. Augustine, FL and Spanish left SC for good • 83 years before any more European settlements were attempted in SC
