  1. FUNGI

  2. Cell Structure • Eukaryotic • Yeast are unicellular; but mold, rust, mushrooms and truffles are multicellular.

  3. Nutrition • All fungi are heterotrophs • Some are parasites living off of another living thing • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuKjBIBBAL8 • Most are decomposers that release digestive enzymes to break down fallen logs, dead leaves, leftover carcasses • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_rprVa-RY4

  4. Structure • Cell walls are made of a polysaccharide called chitin, (also found in the exoskeleton of insects, crustaceans). • Cytoplasm and organelles can move from one cell to another in the multicellular organism.

  5. Parts and Function • Mycelium – extensive network of cells below ground absorbing nutrients, grows rapidly and has a large surface area • Hyphae – reproductive part above ground (fruiting body)

  6. Reproduction - asexual • Budding occurs in yeast • Most fungi release spores (haploid) from gills in the sporangium

  7. Reproduction - sexual • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDwgSWDqKoQ • Two sexes + and – • Parent hypha join & form a zygospore (diploid)

  8. Is There a FUN GUY in YOUR Life? • Blue Cheese • Yeast Infection (Candidiasis) • Bread Rising • Decomposition • Athlete’s Foot • Ringworm • Blight

  9. WHY DID THE MUSHROOM GO TO THE PARTY? Because he was a FUNGI! Explore More: Kingdom Fungi pg. 50 www.SCIENCESOURCE.ca
