Greece • Culture and food traditions have become very blended with surrounded countries • Very sunny climate, excellent for growing • Main Ingredients: • Grains: rice and wheat • Vegetables: beans, tomatoes, eggplant, onions, garlic • Orchards: olives, nuts, figs, oranges, apricots, lemons • Spices: oregano, rosemary, mint, and thyme • Animal sources: sheep, pigs, goats, seafood

  3. Greek Dishes • Noted for their “zesty” seasoning • Skewers of meat, veggies, served on pita bread • Dolma – stuffed veggie dish (pg 749)

  4. Greek Salad Horiatiki – tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, onions, olives

  5. Tzatziki Sauce • Sauce with a yogurt base, cucumbers, onions, and spices • Served on food or as a dip with pita chips

  6. Pita Bread • Light and air filled center • Layers separated and then bread is filled

  7. Greek Dessert • Citrus based: orange and lemon • Phyllo dough – baklava • Sweet dessert layered with mixed nuts, cinnamon and sugar • Halva – sesame seeds and honey – very sweet – candy like
