Emotional Intelligence……Huh? “I’m a physician/leader, emotions are a very small part of my daily routine.” “I don’t have time to address emotional issues with my employees “Emotions are difficult to manage, you have to learn to keep them in check.” “Emotions? I leave those issues up to the mental health professionals.”

Emotional Intelligence Definition according to Dr, Reuven Bar-On • Emotional Intelligence is an array of noncognitive capabilities, competencies, and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures. • Model is multifactorial and relates to potential for performance • Factorial components resemble personality factors, but can change and can be altered

Emotional Intelligence is NOT : • Cognitive Intelligence (IQ) • A standardized means of measuring our cognitive abilities (memory, reasoning, recall symbolic thinking, visual-motor performance) • Aptitude • A written, oral, or performance test designed to measure a person’s potential ability for performing well in some future selected skill or activity (musical aptitude, clerical aptitude, mechanical aptitude)

  5. Emotional Intelligence is NOT: • Achievement • A standardized examination that assess the proficiency level already attained in specific performance (grades in school subjects, SAT) • Vocational Interest • A test that assesses a person’s interests in order to help them choose, prepare for, enter upon, and progress in an occupation.

  6. Emotional Intelligence is NOT: • Personality • The distinctively different characteristic or sum total of a person, including his or her behavior and character traits (honesty, loyalty, introversion) • Trait or long term characteristics of the person
