  1. Napoleon: Hero or Villain? Topic: Positive and Negative Impacts of Napoleon Bonaparte Essential Question: Did Napoleon mark a success or failure of the French Revolution? Explain!

  2. Bridging the Gap • French Revolution officially ended in 1798 • Still a lot of disagreement over how the country should be run • In 1799, a genius military leader named Napoleon takes advantage of the disagreement, and becomes the leader of France

  3. Emperor Napoleon I • Napoleon was an absolute ruler…. What is ironic about this? • In 1802 he declared himself Consul (Ruler) for LIFE • He made all decisions on his own: Military, economy, foreign relations, laws. No one could tell him what to do or how to do it

  4. What did he do? • Made peace with the Catholic Church, and supported religious tolerance • Created a set of laws, the Napoleonic Code that made all French Male Citizens Equal, ended serfdom • Made women less equal than men, not allowing them to be a part of politics/government, and making it harder for women to win in a legal dispute in the court of law • Encouraged new industry, built roads and canals • Built a system of public schools • People in the government were hired based on merit/skill, not title or status. This was a large idea carried over from the revolution • Restored order and security

  5. What ELSE did he do?!!!? • Shut down almost all newspapers, and screened anything that was still allowed to be written • Government police violated privacies, including going through the mail of French Citizens • Limited Freedom of speech/expression

  6. Napoleon the Awesome Military Leader • Through amazing military strategy and nationalism, Napoleon created the largest empire in Europe since the Roman Empire. • Invaded Spain, Portugal, FORCING equality and religious tolerance on the new lands • And then…. Napoleon turned towards Russia

  7. Russia Fail • 600,000 troops into Russia to conquer the capital, Moscow. • Russia is cold. • Russians kept retreating, burning everything as they go leaving no food for the French • Once they arrived to Moscow…

  8. The End of a Short (Person and Career) • This made France weak, and lose all territory gained under Napoleon • Napoleon was exiled to Elba, but it was not far enough. Came back and crowned himself Emperor. • Eventually exiled again to the true middle of nowhere, St. Helena, where he died. • Huge impact on history, and was only in charge from 1799 – 1813.
