  2. Health-related Fitness • Cardiovascular endurance • Heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply O2 to the tissues • Flexibility • Ability to move a body part through a full range of motion • Body Composition • Ratio of body fat to lean body tissue

  3. Health-related Fitness • Muscular Strength • Amount of force a muscle can exert • Muscular Endurance • Ability to perform physical tasks over a period of time w/out becoming fatigued

  4. Measuring each Element • Cardiovascular endurance • Mile Run or Step test • Flexibility • Sit and Reach • Muscular Strength • Curl-ups or Sit-ups • Muscular Endurance • Flex arm hang • Body Composition • “Pinch Test”

  5. Body Mass Index (BMI) • Ratio that allows you to assess: • body size in relation to ht. and wt. • Influenced by: • Gender • Age • Weight/Height • Body frame • Growth rate • Metabolic rate • Activity level

  6. Calculating BMI • Different ratios of ht. and wt. can be healthy • Teens grow at different rates and way • BMI = wt (in lbs.) x 703 / (ht) • Why is this important info. to know? 2

  7. Improving Cardiovascular Endurance • Examples: swimming, walking, biking, hiking, skating, etc. • Helps increase your heart rate & lung capacity • Done 3-5 days a week • For 30-60 minutes

  8. Improving Flexibility • Through regular stretching exercises • Done before every physical activity • Examples: • Arm circles • Lunges • Hollywood's • Butterflies • Crossovers

  9. Improving Muscular Strength and Muscular Endurance • Examples: • Weight Lifting • Resistance exercises • Yoga • Push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups • Done 2-3 day a week
