  3. Is there a list of what’s in HINARI? • For a full listing of journals, databases and online books see http://extranet.who.int/hinari/en/journals.php • The list contains access by: • Broad subject area • Language of publication • Publisher

  4. What equipment do I need in order to use HINARI? • Baseline requirements include • Computer connected to the Internet with a minimal high-speed 56K baud rate or higher • Internet browser (Explorer 4.0 or higher, Netscape 6.0 or higher or Mozilla Firefox1.0 or higher) • Adobe Acrobat viewer (4.0 or higher) – for the download of PDF files

  5. Can HINARI help me obtain computer equipment and online access? • No, HINARI cannot provide computer equipment or online access • Participating institutions have been able to justify additional resources from their institution or outside agencies • Identify potential funding sources within or outside your institution • Develop a ‘one page’ proposal (be prepared) • Stress the value of HINARI - access to 3680 e-journals through 2015

  6. I received the password but can not log-in, what do I do? • Ensure that you are typing the correct password, if necessary, by cutting and pasting it • If you still can not log in, send a message to HINARI at hinari@who.int • As of May 2007, HINARI has installed a new (Microsoft developed) authentication system and this should eliminate some of the log-in problems

  7. Can I access journals in languages other than English? • From ‘Find journals by language of publication’, use the ‘SELECT A LANGUAGE’ drop down menu for access to all journals that publish articles in languages other than English • From the ‘SELECT DATABASE/INDEX’ drop down menu, you will be able to search regional databases that contain articles in journals published in the developing world - including some in languages other than English • From ‘Search HINARI journal articles through PubMed’, you can ‘limit’ PubMed searches to identify full-text articles by specific language

  8. Why can I get full-text access to some journals and not others? • There are some exceptions to full-text access for the 3680 journals that are available to registered institutions • A few journals are excluded from users within Band 2 countries - according to the wishes of the publishers and societies • If you have a query about specific titles, contact HINARI at hinari@who.int

  9. How can I access a particular journal(s)? • Use the ‘Find journals by title’ A-Z list • Click on the letter that corresponds to the first letter of the journal name • Click again to go directly to the journal's homepage

  10. Can I search by the journal title, author or specific subjects? • The majority of HINARI online journals can be searched using a special version of PubMed (Medline). After logging onto HINARI, click on the link, ‘Search HINARI journal articles through PubMed (Medline) • PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine (USA), contains over 15 million citations for biomedical articles and, via HINARI, links to the full-text documents • Several other specialist indexes and databases, such as AIDS Abstracts or CINAHL can be searched by journal title, author or subject

  11. Why can’t I get access to the full-text of the journal if I link directly from the publisher’s website? • To benefit from the access rights provided by HINARI, all participants must log onto HINARI with the institutional NAME/PASSWORD – to be properly authenticated • Unless you are authenticated on the HINARI site, you will not be able to access the HINARI resources at http://extranet.who.int/hinari/en/journals.php • Note: once you properly login, you can access a publisher’s website/full-text journals by using the ‘SELECT PUBLISHER’ drop down menu

  12. Can I download complete journal issues or books? • No. Users may not download complete journal issues or books • Users may download and save limited numbers of articles or chapters from any one journal issue or book, not to exceed 15% of the issue or book • For further information, see HINARI DOs and DONTs on the training page at http://www.who.int/hinari/training/

  13. Are back issues available online? • The majority of the journals do offer access to back issues • The number of years of back issues available is determined by each publisher and will vary accordingly • Via the “journal holdings’, users can check which years/volumes/issues of each journal are accessible • As publishers make more back years of their journals available online, and accessible through HINARI, we update the information on the complete list of titles

  14. Can I access HINARI outside of my institution? • Access to the journals may only be provided from • Computers or other digital installations owned by or under the direct control of the institution • Personal computers owned personally by the employees, faculty or students of the institution • Use is only permitted within the country of registration
