  1. Vocabulary • Get a new vocabulary chart • Write the definitions for the following terms: • Imperialism • Protectorate • Genocide • Concession

  2. A Western-Dominated World

  3. Imperialism • Domination by one country of the politics, economics and/or society of another country.

  4. Causes of Imperialism • Ever since the Age of Exploration, countries sought to set up colonies in the areas they encountered. • By the 1800s, Europe gained power and influence. • Encouraged by their new economic and military strength, Europeans embarked on a path of aggressive expansion.

  5. Motives of the New Imperialists • Economic Interests: • The Industrial Revolution created needs and desires that spurred overseas expansion. • The Industrial Revolution created a need for raw materials (natural resources) and markets to sell new goods.

  6. Motives of the New Imperialists • Political and Military Interests: • Industrial powers seized island and harbors for merchant ships and naval vessels. • Western leaders claimed that colonies were needed for national security. • They also felt that ruling a global empire increased a nation’s prestige around the world (nationalism).

  7. Motives of the New Imperialists • Humanitarian Goals: • Missionaries, doctors and colonial officials believed they had a duty to spread what they saw as the blessings of western civilization, including its medicine, law, and Christian religion.

  8. Motives of the New Imperialists • Social Darwinism: • What did Social Darwinism encourage? Racism. • There was a growing sense of racial superiority in the West. European races, they argued, were superior to all others, and imperial conquest and destruction of weaker races were simply nature’s way of improving the human species.

  9. Forms of Imperial Rule • Colonies: • A territory under immediate control of another state. • French colonies used direct rule; their goal was to impose French culture on their colonies and turn them into French provinces. • British colonies used indirect rule; they used local rulers and encouraged the children of the rulers to be educated in Britain. This groomed a new “westernized” generation of leaders to continue indirect imperial rule and spread British civilization.

  10. Forms of Imperial Rule • Protectorate: • Local rulers were left in place but were expected to follow the advice of European advisors on issues such as trade or missionary activity. • Cost less to run than a colony and did not usually require a large commitment of military forces.

  11. Forms of Imperial Rule • Sphere of Influence: • An area in which an outside power claimed exclusive investment or trading privileges. • Europeans carved out these sphere in China and elsewhere to prevent conflicts among themselves. • The United States claimed Latin America as its sphere of influence.
