  1. JOT NOTE RULES Simple steps to remember for taking successful Jot Notes!

  2. FIRST things First • Skim and Scan the material (look at all the features of print and text) • Look for titles and subtitles –How has the author organized the information for you to read? Features of Print and Text -maps -meaning of type face (bold, italic, underline) -pictures -division of space -captions -charts -graphs

  3. Find the section you need, then READ! • Read to figure out what the text is saying. Read for understanding!

  4. After you read, THEN you make notes!

  5. Your notes will have….. NO SENTENCES! Leave out words like: the, so, because, they, and, to, of, but, he/she

  6. Instead make simple PHRASES!!! • Each phrase includes 1 idea • Each idea should be its own note • Start each idea / note with a bullet • Each note should be 6-8 words (does not including #'s or symbols)

  7. Use short cut symbols for words that are repeated often. • Native Americans = NAs • Christopher Columbus = CC

  8. Repetitive words are a waste of time and space • Do not repeat words, leave them out! • Don't include anything you don't understand

  9. Take down full bibliographicalinformation for each source • Make more notes than you think you will need • Be brief • Take down only key words and ideas in point form

  10. Bibliographic Information • Author(s) name • Title of resource • Edition • Year published • Publishing Company • Page number(s) used

  11. Jot notes must be organized using HEADINGS and SUBHEADINGS. • Your headings are questions • Your jot notes are the answers • Jot notes must be short phrases THAT MAKE SENSE

  13. The reason for taking jot notes… • Collect info on a Native culture such as the Plains People • Organize info to write well structured paragraphs under subheadings (in your own words) • To prevent plagiarism

  14. YOUR FINAL CHALLENGE! • Create your ownfactual booklet featuring the information you have collected • Use as many of the features of print and text as possible • Must include: Table of Contents, Map, Sub-Headings, Headings, Illustrations, etc.
