Objectives Increase the number of young people undertaking workplace learning placements in places of employment, especially within industries that provide strong vocational outcomes for students Increase the alignment between VET provision and local industry needs by facilitating interaction between education & training providers & industry around workplace learning placement opportunities Increase the number of appropriate workplace learning opportunities available to Koorie young people Generate & identify new workplace learning placement opportunities 2

  5. Regional Coordination • 3 WLCPs • 3 LLENs • DEECD NMR To: • Have a coordinated approach across NMR • Share opportunities • Avoid duplication & confusion • Get the most from the total resources

What is Hume Whittlesea Workplace Learning (HWWL)? • An initiative set up by the State Government to link schools and education providers to industry in order to: • Facilitate workplace learning opportunities for students in education • Assist students to gain employability skills • Assist industry/employers to gain access to young people • Form partnerships with a range of stakeholders including employers, education providers, community groups, government departments so that we all work together • Ultimately increase the skills base in Melbourne’s North • Continuous evaluation based on action learning process

Our Role Generate Workplace Learning Opportunities Act as a visible contact for employers Increase opportunities for Koorie young people Build the skills base in the North Increase employer awareness of the SWL program Provide up to date, local industry & labour market information Improve alignment between local industry and VET offerings To achieve the above we will be working in close partnership with the HWLLEN. 7

  8. Types of Workplace LearningIn order of priority Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) School Based Apprenticeships (SBATs) Work Experience 8

Work Place Learning Coordinators will not interact directly with young people Schools match young people with specified criteria for a placement Schools complete the Work Placement or Work Experience forms and provide OH&S training Schools will retain responsibility for workplace visits during student placements 9

Forging Successful Partnerships To maximise opportunities for the young people of the north we will work in collaboration with: Hume Whittlesea LLEN Industry and employers Koorie community DEECD Local Government (Hume and Whittlesea) Schools TAFES, RTOs and Universities ACE Providers GTOs Apprenticeship Centres Community Groups 11

Complimentary Programs The Workplace Learning Program will link into the following existing regional events to support strong vocational outcomes: Real Industry Job Interviews Try a Trade Making Choices Breakfast Finding My Place igreen Youth Employment Opportunities Fair Northern Careers and SBAT Expo 12

  13. Opportunities The HWWL Coordinators have presented the program to industries in the region including the following: Toll Industries Caterpillar Australia Post Vic Roads Qantas 13

  14. Opportunities HWWL Coordinators have established a commitment from the following companies and are currently promoting opportunities: Windsor Caravans Continental VDO Bayford Mantello Wentworth Furniture 14

  15. Opportunities HWWL Coordinators have established relationships with the following major Group Training Organisations: • VACC • Apprenticeships Plus • Migas • 370 degrees

  16. Vacancies 2010 HWWL Coordinators have already promoted vacancies in the following industries: • Automotive • Business • Electrical • Cabinet Making • Engineering • Child Care • Sports & Recreation

  17. Vacancies 2011 Next year we will be promoting many new vacancies including: • Business • IT • Sports & Recreation • Retail (Bookshop) • Business/ Accounting • Electrical Engineering • Transport and Logistics
