Treaty of Fort Laramie • Treaty of 1868- Sioux live on reservation • Result of attacks along Bozeman Trail • Natives received • Land along Missouri River • protection and supplies • Problems with treaty • Not all Chiefs signed • Expected to come and go from reservation • Expected to use traditional hunting grounds • Supplies came late and poor quality

  4. The Ghost Dance • Community dance • Special outfits, face painting • Lively dance • Loud singing • Indian prophet claimed performance of dance would lead to peace, prosperity and a return to their way of life • Some believed dance would eradicate whites

  5. Misunderstanding of the Ghost Dance • Whites interpreted dance to be a war dance Encouraged government ban

  6. Sitting Bull • Sioux leader • Supported ghost dance • U.S. military panicked • During arrest attempt, Sitting Bull was killed • Cavalry was sent to disarm Lakota Tribe • Led to Wounded Knee Massacre

  7. Dawes Act- 1887 • Teach desire to own property and farm • Gave each family land • Sold rest to settlers • Settlers took best land • Considered to be the end of the Native American way of life

  8. Assimilation • Assimilation • Believed in “Americanizing” the Native Americans • “kill the Indian, save the man” • Expected of them • Give up their beliefs • Also their way of life • Become part of the white culture
