  1. Post-Classical Japan

  2. China’s Influence on Japan • Chinese and Korean scholars and merchants brought Chinese culture to Japan • Confucianism instilled loyalty to family and ruler • Buddhism taught the Japanese to renounce selfish desire • Daoism encouraged love of nature

  3. China’s Influence on Japan • Japanese also adopted Chinese writing, music, art, dance and cooking • The ruler of Japan even set up an imperial court similar to that of China and declared himself emperor

  4. Japanese Society • Although greatly influenced by China, Japan was not an exact copy • Japanese emperors lowered taxes • Nobles raised their own armies • Imperial government grew weaker • Warfare broke out

  5. Japanese Society • During the warfare, one noble emerged as most powerful • Instead of overthrowing the emperor, he had the emperor appoint him “supreme military commander”– (Shogun) • For the next 600 years, the Shoguns were the real rulers of Japan while the emperors were merely figureheads

  6. Japanese Society Don’t mind me…I’m just randomly over here. NBD.

  7. Japanese Society • John Green wants to talk to you!!! (fast forward to 4:50 if you want to skip the part on nationalism)

  8. Samurai • Samurai were recruited to provide military protection of noble lands • Samurai were knights on horseback with armor of leather and iron • Each Samurai swore to follow a strict code of honor called Bushido

  9. Daimyo • Each Samurai swore an oath of loyalty to the emperor and to his local Daimyo (lord) • Bushido emphasized loyalty of a Samurai to his Daimyo • In return, the Daimyo provided the Samurai with social status and economic support

  10. Apply it! • What are some ways in which Japanese culture was affected by the Chinese? • What other political system mirrors that of Japanese Feudalism? Why was it needed? • What European ideal of Knights is similar to that of Samurai Bushido?
