  1. Session 8 : Meteorological Natural Hazards These sessions will introduce the basic natural processes, historical geographic ranges, and potential impacts of the natural hazards that are not as unique to the coastal zone. (Source: NOAA Photo Gallery) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 1, Lecture Outline

  2. Introduction: Meteorological Hazards in the Coastal Zone • Coastal Hazards can be defined as natural hazards that occur within the coastal zone. The hazards discussed in Sessions 8 and 9 can happen in the coastal zone, but occur in other locations as well. • The following meteorological hazards will be discussed in this session: • Severe Thunderstorms • Tornadoes • Drought • Blizzards • Dam Failure (Source: National Weather Service) (Source: NOAA Photo Library) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 2, Introduction

  3. What is a Severe Thunderstorm? Thunderstorms result in rain, wind, lightning, and sometimes will produce hail and tornadoes Distribution of Hail Storms (Source: NOAA) Types of Lightning (Source: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 3, Severe Thunderstorm

  4. What is a Tornado? (Source: Dr. T. T. Fujita, University of Chicago) (Source: NOAA Photo Library) Tornadoes in the US are concentrated in “Tornado Alley”, but can occur along the coast (Source: http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/tornado.html) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 4, Tornadoes

  5. What is Drought? (Source: http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 5, Drought

  6. What is a Blizzard? (Source: NOAA) (Source: http://wintercenter.homestead.com/photoindex.html) Blizzards are a severe form of winter weather hazards. Ice storms also are a dangerous result of winter storm systems. Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 6, Blizzards

  7. What is a Wildfire? A wildfire is an uncontrolled burning of grasslands, brush or woodlands. (Source: http://mofire.1wh.com/.%5CASPages%5Cmofire11.asp) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 7, Wildfire

  8. Tornado Disasters • Tornadoes can bring mass destruction to some areas, yet leave adjacent areas untouched. (Source: http://www.tornadoproject.com/toptens/topten3.htm) Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 8, Tornado Disaster

  9. Drought Disasters (Source: http://www.weatherstock.com/droughtcat2.html) (Source: NOAA) A typical scene during the Dust Bowl Session 8: Meteorological Hazards Coastal Hazards Management Course Slide 8. 9, Drought Disasters

  10. Severe Thunderstorm Disasters (Source: http://sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/socasp/weather1/changnon.html) (Source: National Weather Service Forecast Office) Thunderstorms occur regularly, but hail and lightning can cause damage to property, injury and death.
