  1. Water pollution

  2. Water Pollution CAUSES 1. Industrialization 2. Rapid human population growth

  3. Water Pollution • Pollution discharged from a single source is called POINT SOURCE POLLUTION • Factory dumping • Oil spill • Hot water

  4. Water Pollution • Pollution discharged from many sources is called NON-POINT SOURCE POLLUTION • Dumping into the water (cruise ships, cargo ships) • Dumping chemicals down the drain

  5. Non-point Source Pollution • Farms: herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, feces • Chemicals added to roads • Oil and gasoline

  6. 1. Thermal Pollution • Pollution caused by the heating of a body of water affecting the organisms that live there

  7. Salton Sea • Inland saline sea in California

  8. 2. Groundwater Pollution • Pollution caused by chemicals seeping into the groundwater supply • Pesticides • Herbicides • Fertilizers

  9. Love Canal, Niagara • 1900’s • 1950’s • Asthma, miscarriages, mental retardation • 1970’s • 56% of the children in the area were born with birth defects • 1980’s

  10. 3. Ocean pollution • Pollutants being dumped into the ocean • Oil spills • Cruise ship garbage

  11. Bikini Atoll • 1946 to 1958 • Hydrogen bomb test site

  12. Effects of Pollution

  13. 1. Biomagnification • The accumulation of pollutants in a food web • Pollutant levels increase as you go up the food chain

  14. 2. Artificial Eutrophication • In imbalance of nutrients in an aquatic ecosystem • Causes overgrowth of algae

  15. 3. Diseases • Caused by water borne bacteria • Cholera • Typhoid • Schistosomiasis

  16. 4 million children die each year from diarrhea caused by contaminated water

  17. 4. Clean Up Costs • Takes a lot of money, time and resources to clean up water pollution

  18. Clean up Costs • Exxon Valdez • $2 billion in clean up • $1 billion in legal fees • Deepwater Horizon • $20 billion

  19. Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill • 8,332 species • 1,200 fish • 200 birds • 1,400 mollusks • 1,500 crustaceans • 4 sea turtles • 29 marine mammals • 6,814 dead animals have been collected • 6,104 birds • 609 sea turtles • 100 dolphins and other mammals • 1 reptile

  20. 5. Acid Rain • Acidic material deposited when it rains • Erodes buildings, and harms vegetation

  21. What can we do?? 1. Educate People

  22. 2. Enforce pollution regulations

  23. 3. Recycling materials
