Undernourishment vs. Malnourishment • First to calculate the cost of world hunger, we must see what defines world hunger • Other than the obvious definition of World Hunger being food insecurity, it specifically means the number of people who cannot get their hands on enough food to sustain themselves or undernourishment • Malnourishment is not undernourishment (not getting enough food) but is defined as not getting all the necessary minerals to survive but may be getting plenty of a couple minerals

  4. Costs • According to the United Nations, there are 862 million undernourished people in the world • The United Nations estimates that it would take $30 billion dollars a year to get those undernourished people the food they need • The UN estimates that it would take ten years to make sustainable improvements in the lives of the world’s undernourished population

  5. Simple Math • Using the UN’s estimate, $30 billion dollars over the course of ten years is $300 billion dollars • Although that may seem like a number, when put in perspective with other financial figures it’s hardly a large number

To give you an idea… • $30 billion dollars is less than ½ of 1% of the world’s GDP • $30 billion dollars is 1/23 of the amount of money that it took to bail out Wall Street • $30 billion dollars is 1/18 the money that JUST THE UNITED STATES spent on their military last year • $30 billion dollars is $1.7 billion dollars less than the amount of food the United Kingdom wastes each year • $30 billion dollars is 2/3 the amount of money that the U.S. Congress approved to spend on Iraqi Construction programs

The Truth Revealed • Although $30 billion dollars is not a lot of money, it has never been a problem of money • Although 862 million people seems like too much to feed, the world has more than enough arable land to feed the population • The reason these poor people starve is apathy and the fact that the rest of the world is apathetic towards helping those who need the help the most
