  1. ENGG MG 6003 - ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT EM12 – Specifications and Drawings

  2. ENGG MG 6003 - ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT EM12A - SPECIFICATIONS AND DRAWINGS Overview

  3. Functions Specifications – detailed description of the standards of materials and workmanship required to carry out the Contract Works Drawings – Graphical representation of the Contract Works Drawings detail what work is to be done Specification detail the standards and quality is to be achieved Work together to define Contract Works Usually prepared together

  4. Drawings Detail what work is to be done Specifications Detail the standards and quality is to be achieved Functions Extracts from Specification of Contract 07/19 – Jackman Avenue Pipelines Detail from Drawing 11 from Drawings of Contract 07/19 – Jackman Avenue Pipelines

  5. ENGG MG 6003 - ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT EM12B - SPECIFICATIONS

  6. Specifications Allows Designer to state exactly what is required Allows Contractor to check that Contract Works are constructed as the Designer intended. All Tenderers price same product – prevents Tenderers providing cheap and nasty products Specifications sets out quality required Quality – fitness for purpose Product does what it is required to do – no more, no less Lower quality than required – product may not perform as required Higher quality than specified – product may cost more

  7. Clear grass with 10 t digger Compact subgrade with 5 t vibrating roller Shape subgrade to 3% slope using grader Specification Type Method Specification details methods to be undertaken to carry out the work item Performance or End Use Specification defines the quality of the finished product – its form and/or function does not say how to produce the finished product Construct subgrade to shape shown on Drawing and to specified compaction

  8. Technical Specifications • Generic technical information • Usually not changed • Sets out • Standards of Workmanship • Quality of Materials • Covers • Required methodologies • Material standards • Testing and inspection requirements • Finished product standards • Arranged by trades or work activities Specifications Preliminary and General Aka “Preliminaries” or “Project Specification” Provides project specific information Needs to be written or revised for each contract Generally covers Description of the Contract Works Extent of Contract Works Site specific issues Work or materials to be provided by others

  9. Contract Variations Change in quality, workmanship , materials or method of construction Usually initiated by Contractor Can have cost and time implications Get it right in the Contract Discuss possible methods with Contractors during design phase Discuss material use and availability with suppliers at design phase Observe how similar projects were carried out

  10. ENGG MG 6003 - ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT EM12C - STANDARDS

  11. Standards Standard – a specification formally approved by an organisation Also known as “standard specifications” Most engineering construction work is repetitive Organisations have standards for specific work items Can reference standard in specification Common used reference standards New Zealand Standards – Prepared by Standards NZ Government organisations – Standards specific to organisations function Councils – Engineering standards

  12. New Zealand Standards Produced by Standards New Zealand E.g. NZS 3114:1987 - Concrete surface finishes. NZS – New Zealand Standard 3114 – Standard number – provided sequentially as standards produced 1987 – year of issue/revision Concrete surface finishes – title describing work item Compiled by committee of industry experts Best practice for specific work items SNZ work with Australian Standards – produce joint standards AS/NZS xxx

  13. Government Organisations TNZ B/02:2005 - SPECIFICATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF UNBOUND GRANULAR PAVEMENT 1. SCOPE This specification shall apply to the construction of unbound granular pavement layers. The term pavement layer shall apply to any layer using sub-base or basecourse aggregates. The pavement layer shall be constructed in accordance with the levels, grades and cross-sections shown in the drawings. 2. MAINTENANCE OF EXISTING SURFACE Where the project consists of reconstruction or overlay of the existing pavement the existing surface shall be maintained from the date when the Contractor occupies the site or as specified in the contract documents. Should any potholes, ravelling or other faults develop, the affected area shall be made good by the Contractor to the standard existing when occupancy was given. Government organisations responsible for engineering works NZ Transportation Authority – construction and maintenance of state highways (www.nzta.govt.nz). Reference Austroads guides Department of Conservation – maintenance of conservation estate Department of Building and House – building code (www.dbh.govt.nz) Extract from NZTA B/02

  14. Councils Responsible for development in city or district Own and operate water, wastewater, stormwater and park facilities Produce standards for their activities May be referred to as “Engineering Standards” “Environmental Standards” “Development Standards”

  15. Referencing Standards Can reference standards into a specification All of referenced standard becomes part of contract document Can cause conflicts or unintended conditions Sometimes best to reference sections of standards Example from Jackman Ave Pipelines Contract

  16. Extract from NZS 2032 Extract from Technical Specification of Tender Document Referencing Standards Extract from Section 4 of NZS 2032 These conditions and everything else in the standard are now part of the Jackman Avenue Pipelines Contract Agreement

  18. Drawings Title Block

  19. Drawing Planning Decide what needs to be illustrated – “Cartoon” Arrange drawings into logical order Move from the general to the specific Group similar activities e.g. Water plan and sections in consecutive drawings Group details for each activity on the same sheet i.e. Minimise the number of drawings a worker needs to reference to do a job Reference other relevant details Text Need to avoid cluttering with detailed text. Detailed text should be in the Specification

  20. Contract Title Location Plan Drawing Index Title Page Title Block

  21. Legend Natural features Site Extent and other stages Site Plan Access Site Details Existing features Property Boundary and Neighbouring Properties Existing contours Scale Signoffs

  22. Connection to future Works Proposed Scheme Plan - overview Proposed Works

  23. Reference other documents Proposed Scheme Plan - Detail Reference other details

  24. Extent of Work Descriptions Long Section - Road Section title Scale

  25. Dimensions Extents Detailed item descriptions Cross Section - Road Similar Details grouped on same sheet

  26. Manhole identification Long Section – Stormwater Pipeline
