**Perpendiculars & Distance**Notes 15 – Section 3.6**Essential Learnings**• Students will understand and be able to find the distance between a point and a line and between two parallel lines.**Distance**• The distance between a line and a point not on the line is the length of the segment perpendicular to the line from the point. A B C**Altitude of a Triangle**• The altitude (height) of a triangle is the distance from the vertex to the base.**Perpendicular Postulate**• Given a line and a point not on the line, then there exists exactly one line through the point that is perpendicular to the given line.**Parallel Lines**• The distance between two parallel lines is the perpendicular distance between one of the lines and any point on the other line. • Parallel lines are equidistant – the distance between the lines is always the same. • In a plane, if two lines are each equidistant from a third line, then the two lines are parallel to each other.**Constructions!**• Using a compass and straight edge.**Assignment**WS 3.6: Parallel and Perpendiculars Quiz 2-2 Friday
