1. Perpendiculars & Distance Notes 15 – Section 3.6

2. Essential Learnings • Students will understand and be able to find the distance between a point and a line and between two parallel lines.

3. Distance • The distance between a line and a point not on the line is the length of the segment perpendicular to the line from the point. A B C

4. Altitude of a Triangle • The altitude (height) of a triangle is the distance from the vertex to the base.

5. Perpendicular Postulate • Given a line and a point not on the line, then there exists exactly one line through the point that is perpendicular to the given line.

6. Parallel Lines • The distance between two parallel lines is the perpendicular distance between one of the lines and any point on the other line. • Parallel lines are equidistant – the distance between the lines is always the same. • In a plane, if two lines are each equidistant from a third line, then the two lines are parallel to each other.

7. Constructions! • Using a compass and straight edge.
