THE BAY COLONY (Puritans among us) -More moderate Puritans sought to reform the church from within… -(1629) Felt they were no longer safe in England (Charles I dismissed Parliament). -Got a charter from the Massachusetts Bay Company. 1630= The Great Migration 11 ships, nearly 1000 immigrants John Winthrop first governor Prospered through fur, fishing, and ship building. Biggest and most influential New England settlement. 1/9

CITY ON A HILL Wanted to build a perfect society, one that all could look to as an example (strict code of conduct)… Believed they had a covenant with God (a mission)… “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 “for we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” -John Winthrop
