  7. “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it” - Michelangelo

  8. Leader

  9. Quotes Challenges of life are not supposed to paralyse you but should help you to discover who you really are • Leaders find opportunities • Leaders always finds glass is half full • Leaders create positive energy • Leaders discover other leaders

  10. Always Remember As Leader I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

  11. Important Challenge There is no challenge more challenging than the challenge to improve yourself

  12. Quotes To be successful you must accept all challenges that come your way. You can't just accept the ones you like

  13. Leadership • At the end of the day leadership is about your own values and behaviours • Most important quality you need is being self-disciplined

  14. My Light Bulb Moment! The day I discovered what really Leadership is about!

  15. Honest Confession • My own leadership style has changed a lot over the years. • When I was the MD of Bury, I did not enjoy the job • Today, in WWLFT, I really enjoy my job • Why?

  16. My own style of Leadership • MD of Bury (1998-2003) • Enthusiastic and passionate • I wanted to change the world • I wanted result at any cost • I was impatient • Spent 90% of my time with 5% difficult and useless doctors • I was over-confident and may even be arrogant • MD of Wigan (2010 – To date) • Enthusiastic and passionate • I have changed myself • I want results • I have lot of patience • I spend lot of my time with my hard working and other colleagues • I am polite, courteous

  17. My own style of Leadership Wigan • Leadership is responsibility • I enjoy meetings but reduced them but spend more time meeting people • I try my best to win the heart • I tell them what needs to be done • I thank them often, praise them a lot • I avoid any knee jerk reaction • I am very composed and calm • I do not find anyone difficult • Bury • Leadership is a power • Meetings were fire fighting • I wanted to win the mind • I told them what to do • I never used to thank hard working consultants • Lot of knee jerk reaction • People could see my anger • They are difficult doctors

  18. Results • Bury • Did not enjoy my job • Got some results • Never used to sleep well • I was not confident of long term success • Never created more leaders • Short term aims • I saw them as difficult bunch • WWLFT • Enjoying a lot • Getting consistent results • Sleep very well • I am pretty confident • Today have 22 medical leaders • Long term strategy to be the best in the country • I don’t find anyone difficult

  19. Leaders Job is to Change • If you always do what you have always done you always get what you always got • Anthony Robinson • The price of doing the same old thing is far higher than the price of change. • Bill Clinton • Change is the law of life and those who look only to past or present are certain to miss the future – John F Kennedy

  20. But change is not easy • Human beings are creatures of habits • I am all for progress but it is the change I can’t cope with – Mark Twine • Without change there won’t be progress • Without change we will not be able to modernise NHS • This is what the leadership is about • But it is equally important how you change and challenge

  21. I have changed a lot • Leadership is not power, position or authority • But great sense of responsibility • To do the right thing for those who are affected by your leadership • Patients must always come first • Look after all staff and no favouritism

  22. Qualities • Integrity and honesty • Fairness • Always be polite and courteous • Always respect others • Always stay calm and composed • But always do the right thing for patients • Everything else is secondary

  23. My Mantra • Patient safety and quality is not for compromise • Anything else – I am willing to listen

  24. Simple Tips • Do not spend 80% of your time and energy on 10% useless or difficult colleagues • Spend it on those vast majority who are nice and want to work with you • Praise them a lot and Thank them often • Help, support and guide them • Communicate with them regularly • A good leader creates more leaders

  25. Resilience • When going gets tough – tough get going • You must stay calm even when there is a storm • If not – you lose others respect • Everyone of us get stressed or frustrated but it is how you cope with them and deal with them is what matters

  26. Mini Me Concept • Good leader makes more good leaders • Identify good leaders amongst your team • Help, support and guide them • Empower and liberate them • But make sure they do what they promised to do • You are responsible for their actions

  27. Build the net work • Build an excellent working relation with your team, colleagues and others • I am very proud of my success in Wigan in brining CCGs, GPs, consultants and Executive Directors together

  28. I have changed a lot • Leader must be • Visible, approachable, honest and sincere • Keep up your promise • Involve, engage, value, help, support, guide your colleagues • Create more leaders, delegate and empower them but also guide and performance manage them • Do not respond to any emails or letters which upset you – sleep over it for 24 hours

  29. Five Important Things to succeed • Organisational culture • Organisational leadership • Effective Governance and Quality Assurance systems • Excellent organisational energy • Good patient and staff feedback

  30. My ultimate aim • To make WWLFT • Safe and Good quality • Effective and Efficient • Good value for the money • Good patient experience • Excellent staff morale

  31. Healthcare Professionals • Should show the leadership which; • Our patients deserve • NHS Needs • Profession expects

  32. Lead and inspire people. Don’t try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead. ~Ross Perot Leadership

  33. A leader’s role is to raise people’s aspirations for what they can become and to release their energies so they will try to get there. ~David R. Gergen Leadership

  34. My Vision • To make it one of the best Trusts in the country • Top 10% of all Trusts • Have created culture, leadership and energy • Good governance and QA systems • Making staff feel valued, involved, engaged, helped and supported • I mentor many consultants • I have hand picked my leaders

  35. My Vision for Wigan • To make our Trust the best in the country • Where every patient says – That is my hospital and I am looked after well • Where every staff says – I work in Wigan hospital and I am very proud of work there

  36. Patient Safety Must Be At The Heart Of Our NHS Board Directors Clinicians Patient

  37. Doctors And Nurses Also Need Support

  38. True or Good Leaders The greatest quality you need is the courage to stick to your principles and take action Having ‘the courage’ to do the right thing but doing it right way is equally important
