  1. Power for UnityMark 15:33-39 • The prayers of Jesus • Lord, give me the strength to endure • Lord, give me the power to forgive • Lord, give me power to bring unity

  2. Mark 15 33 At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.

  3. The setting for this prayer… Sadness Jesus is on the cross Pain Darkness is over the land There is a sense of dread

  4. Jesus is experiencing the loneliness, anxiety, desertion and betrayal of the day Jesus knows God the Father turned away The sin of humanity is carried by Christ Jesus feels the loneliness He quotes the psalmist

  5. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lamasabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

  6. But in the midst of his loneliness there is another story developing This story is not just about suffering and pain This story is about opening doors of hope and grace It has a great surprise ending

  7. There were two major and positive events taking place The first happens at the temple 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

  8. The second happens at the crossas Jesus breathes his last 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

  9. These two events are important and connected The tearing of the temple curtain announced that the kingdom was open to all who would confess Jesus as Lord and Savior The centurion is the first gentile to make the confession

  10. The pecking order High Priest – Holy of Holies Priests – Holy Place Jewish men Jewish women Gentiles

  11. To some the death of Jesus may have seemed like victory To others a terrible tragedy

  12. This was not a tragedy The rules and power of the earth had not won Jesus won by giving us access to God through Christ We could now be united

  13. Hebrews 10 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith…

  14. Jesus took on our sins and atoned for us When he took on our sins he was alone There would never be unity between us and God without payment for our sins With his payment we can have unity Jesus endured a short-term pain, to ensure a long-term relationship with us

  15. Jesus was forsaken that day so he could open the doors of heaven for us So what about us? What does this teach us?

  16. Being Christ-like means • We too work for unity • We must also pray for unity • We must be inviting • We must be welcoming • A common criminal • A Roman soldier

  17. It is so easy to bring chaos Create problems Spread rumors Tear people down

  18. Jesus opened the doors of heaven for us We are called to be the glue The peacemakers The doorman The welcoming committee for the kingdom of heaven
