Class Information • How many units will we study from the textbook this semester? • What percentage of your grade is attendance? • How many exams can you miss and still pass the class? • How many quizzes will we (probably) have this term? • What kinds of absences are excused? • What are the other ways to contact me outside of class?

  7. The Simple Past We use the simple past to talk about completed actions in the past: Affirmative: I / you / we / he / she / they... …visited a museum yesterday. 2. Negative I / you / we / he / she / they... …didn’t go to a concert 2 days ago.

  8. The Simple Past Regular verbs in the past end in -ed: Work worked Play played arrive arrived Irregular verbs do not end in –ed take took go went make made

  9. Speaking Activity • In your groups ask each other questions about your hobbies. Make sure to use Follow-Up Questions and Responses. • What’s your favorite hobby? • When did you start it? • Why do you like it? • Does it cost a lot of money? • When was the last time you …? • How do you feel when you are finished? These are examples only -- listen to your partner and make your own questions.

  10. The Past Continuous was/were + verb + ing We use the past continuous to talk about: Actions in progress in the past. He was talking about the weather for hours. 2. Longer actions interrupted by shorter actions. I was watching TV when the phone rang.
