Vocabulary - Verbs and Prepositions A main verb often needs a preposition to introduce an object. • graduate ~ (place or institution / time) • I graduated from a college in London. • They will graduate in February next year. Sometimes the pairings are very specific to communicate a particular meaning: • fall ~ (love) • She falls in love very easily. Phrasal Verbs

  8. Phrasal Verbs with prepositions These verbs usually end in a preposition that introduces the object. • run into • I ran into my old girlfriend last night. • pick on • A lot of kids pick on Kenji because he is shy.

  9. Verb Phrases with infinitive Some verbs use the infinitive marker “to” (*remember “to” can also be a preposition) • have to • We have to study for the test tonight. • want to • They want to finish the project before Friday. * I go to school every day at 8.

  10. Phrasal Verbs with particles Many verbs have become joined to a specific “preposition” for a specific meaning. If the word doesn’t introduce an object, it is known as a “particle”. • hang out • I love to hang outwith my friends on Saturday. • give in • The company gave into the union’s demands. p. 11 - exs. a & b preposition
