  1. Lyme Disease an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.

  2. Causes of Disease • Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. Borrelia is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to certain species of the genus Ixodes (the hard-bodied 'hard ticks'). • In North America, the black-legged tick or deer tick has been identified as the key to the disease's spread on the east coast. Only about 20% of people who become infected with Lyme disease by the deer tick can remember having been bitten, making early detection difficult in the absence of a rash.

  3. Symptoms • The classic sign of early local infection is a circular, outwardly expanding rash called erythemachronicummigrans which occurs at the site of the tick bite 3 to 32 days after being bitten. And sometimes a true bulls eyes becomes visible. • Patients can also experience flu-like symptoms such as headache, muscle soreness, fever, and malaise.

  4. Connection with Mitosis • This disease has a close connection with mitosis. When a person has Lyme disease their cells are becoming weaker and not as strong as before. When the diseased tick bites the victim, the victims cell automatically start to drive out the disease. So, therefore, the process of Mitosis is not performing at its fullest.

  5. Treatment • Antibiotics are the primary treatment for Lyme disease; the most appropriate antibiotic treatment depends upon the patient and the stage of the disease. • In later stages, the bacteria disseminate throughout the body and may cross the blood-brain barrier, making the infection more difficult to treat. • Treatment included being given many shots and oral medication to try to relieve the symptoms and stop the disease in its tracks.
