Causes/Backround: • Scarring of the liver that prevents blood from flowing through the liver. • More blood to pass through veins in the esophagus. • Esophageal varices occur, meaning that the veins swell up like balloons. • Ruptures veins cause severe internal bleeding could easily lead to death if not treated immediately. • Varices caused by liver scarring can also occur in the stomach. A photo of an esophageal varice. The bubble looking things on the esophageal wall are the swollen veins.

  3. Signs/Diagnosis Physical tests: - bloody or black stool on rectal exam - low blood pressure - Rapid heart rate - EGD (test to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine.) -Nasogastric tube (camera inserted through nose) Photo showing how an EGD is performed.

  4. Symptoms Some people with esophageal varices can have no symptoms Symptoms of serious varices include: • Black, Tarry, and/or bloody stool • Light headedness • Pale Skin • Vomiting • Bloody Vomit Jaundice, or yellow skin or eyes occurs with liver problems .

  5. Treatment Acute Bleeding: • Clotting medicines • Rubber bands on varices • Vasoconstriction drugs • Balloon Tamponades
