  11. Making the Stop • Not on a curve or hill • Not against guardrail/barrier • Not in lane of traffic(rural roads) • Not blocking driveway/intersection • Lighting • Room for vehicles to go around • Neighborhood/Know where you are • Position unit behind violator

  12. Approach • Check number of occupants • Check mirror for traffic • Stay out of lane of traffic • Approach (either side) • Right hand print

During the Stop • TUNNEL VISION(be careful) • Driver & Passenger behavior • Nervous (must be a criminal) • Watch your back(traffic & occupants) • Side of door/front/rear • Keep occupants in the vehicle • Don’t place driver in patrol unit • Run DL/Registration/VIN/NCIC • Don’t stand between vehicles

  15. After The Stop • Move vehicle back away from violator • Violator visibility to enter traffic • Distance for safety • Finish notes after violator leaves • Finish notes before leaving • Not while driving

  17. Officer Safety At Home • Keeping weapons secured • Families killed by service weapons • Security Systems • Keeping doors locked • Windows closed curtains/blinds closed • Out going mail to drop box/secured box
