  1. American Civil War

  2. Battle of Fort Sumter • Battle of Fort Sumter lasted from 3:25 AM on April 12, 1861 to April 13 at around 10:30 PM when the Union soldiers surrendered • There were no casualties in the battle but the Civil War had begun Background: rebel forces shell Sumter

  3. Irvin McDowell and First Manassas • Following the Battle of Fort Sumter President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to crush the rebellion • In 1861 Irvin McDowell is appointed head of the Union Army • With little training the troops left Washington to invade the south • The Confederate forces fled during the battle but were rallied by a young general named Tomas Jackson • Union soldiers dropped their guns and fled all the way to Washington • Four days later McDowell is relieved by George McClellan

  4. Battle of Shiloh • Lasted April 6 through April 7 1862 • The generals were Ulysses Sam Grant for the Union Army and Albert Sidney Johnson and General P.G.T Beauregard for the south • Battle ended in a technical Union victory but with over 13,000 casualties for the North and over 10,000 for the South it was a bloody draw • This battle had a large toll on the South both in men killed and General Johnson was hit with a stray bullet

  5. Gettysburg • After their victory at Chancellorsville Confederate general Robert E Lee took the army of Northern Virginia to invade the north. • Lee hoped that by defeating the Federal Army on northern soil the war would be over • Also by invading the North the Confederate soldiers would be able to plunder and take supplies from farms • The battle raged from July 1, 1863 to July 3 • The part of the Southern army met the 20th Maine at Little Round Top on the 2nd day. Colonel Joshua Chamberlin organized a bayonet charge and drove the rebels back On the last day of the battle Lee ordered 15000 men to charge the Federal lines known as Picket’s charge The attack was a bloody failure and Lee and what was left of his army retreated back to Virginia That same day Vicksburg surrendered thus it was a double victory for the North and the turning point in the Civil War

  6. Battle of the Wilderness Lasted from May 5 to May 7 1864 General Grant was the main Union general and General James Longstreet and General Hill for the Confederacy The fighting was intense as the battered and beaten Confederate forces tried to hold off the overwhelming Union Army The battle was a tactical draw with both sides but Grant did not retreat he showed the Confederate that no matter how bad the losses they would not stop fighting Left: Robert E Lee leads his army into battle

  7. Appomattox Courthouse • General Lee realized on April 9, 1865 that the war was lost. His army was outnumbered, outgunned and out of basic supplies. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865
