  2. Nebula • Clouds of dust and gas • Where stars form because gravity pulls dust/gas together • If center grows hot/dense, fusion starts

  3. Low Mass Star • Main sequence • Hydrogen fuses to helium • Fuel burns slowly for billions of years • Runs out of hydrogen gas

  4. Giant star ---expands ---helium fuses into carbon ---sheds its outer layer

  5. White dwarf ---dead core of giant star ---no fusion, but stays hot for billions of years

  6. High mass stars • Main sequence • Hydrogen fuses to helium • Fuel burns rapidly for millions of years • Runs out of hydrogen gas

  7. Supergiant ---expands ---He fuses to C, then other heavier elements ---iron core forms ---gravity causes core to collapse

  8. High mass stars neutron star ---small, emit other radiation ---pulsars Supergiant explosion (supernova) black hole -massive core of supernova -strong gravitational pull
