Student Guidelines • Be prompt • Be ready to learn when class begins. • Be prepared • Have materials with you and know due dates. • Be a polite and positive participant • Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively. • Be productive • Turn in work on time, and always do your best. • Be a problem solver • Correct problems quickly and peacefully before they escalate.

  5. Procedure for Entering a Classroom • Enter the classroom quietly, move quietly to your seat and sit down. • Have your writing utensil in hand, paper on your desk and science/math book on your desk and begin working on your warm up prior to the end of today’s song.

  6. Questions?? • When should I sharpen my pencil? • What if I don’t have all of materials? • Why is it important to enter quietly? • There are pencil sharpeners located on your desks. You should always be ready to work when Ms. Hutchins begins class. • Spare pencils are located in the new pencil can by the door. Please borrow one and replace it at the end of class.

Procedure for Leaving a Classroom • Write down your homework assignment in your agenda. • Look around your area and throw away any trash in the trash can nearest your desk. • Return any classroom materials borrowed or used for the day’s lesson to the proper place. • Gather all your materials, place them in their proper place, and wait to be dismissed by Ms. Hutchins.

  8. Procedure for Students Seeking Help • If you need help and I am teaching or talking, then write down your question and wait until I am finished. Raise your hand and quietly wait to be acknowledged. • If you are working in a group or independently, utilize the “ask three, then me” rule. Ask three classmates around your area, then me. • Anytime you need my help, please raise your hand and quietly wait be to acknowledged.

  9. Procedure for the Movement of Students and Papers in Classroom • Every group of tables has a classroom manager. The classroom manager is responsible for collecting papers and passing back papers to group members. • While I am teaching, your attention should be on me. No students should be moving while I am talking or giving directions. • Any other movement that is necessary must have my permission.

  10. Procedure for Getting Your Attention I will: • Stand in front of the class. • Raise my hand. • Wait for everyone to be quiet. • Begin speaking. You will: • Stop what you are doing (including talking) and raise your hand. • Start listening.

  11. Special Procedures • Library/Media Center • Distance Learning Lab • Video Conferences • Special guests • Progress reports • Working cooperatively • Fire drill • Intercom announcements • Assemblies • Substitute yeacher • These will be introduced on an “as needed” basis.

  13. Show Respect • Value yourself. Be honest and ethical. • Treat all members of the school community and all visitors with politeness and respect. • Honor the ideas and opinions of others. • Offer to help. • Be responsible with property and belongings.

  14. Responsibility for Coursework • Bring notebook, textbook, paper, and appropriate writing tools to class. • Know due dates, and submit all coursework on time. • All assignments are posted on the white board and on the class Web site. You will also receive a course calendar.

Promote Lifelong Learning You can develop lifelong learning traits: • By showing curiosity about human nature and how the world works. • By seeking and valuing diversity. • By persisting in seeking out new solutions. • By using your unique talents and intelligence to promote positive change. • By learning and applying technology tools to solve problems.

  16. Classroom Policies • Food and beverages are not allowed in the classroom unless it is a designated snack time. • Please be in your seat when the teacher walks in the room, as class begins at that time. • Major assignments and projects can be resubmitted. They will be scored at a 10% deduction. • Absences • Ask team members or a classmate first for assignments. • Each absence has a one-day grace period. • You will receive two emergency bathroom passes. It is your responsibility to keep up with your passes. At the end of the nine weeks you may turn in your passes for 5 bonus points to be added to your lowest grade.

  17. Our Grading Scale • 90-100% = A • 80-89% = B • 70-79% = C • Grades are calculated on cumulative percentage and are rounded up whenever possible. How will you be graded? • Grades are based on the accumulation of points. • Points are based on: • Class work and assessments • Major projects, labs, tests/quizzes, and self-reflection (science journals) • Grades are posted online and updated every Friday. Check on Saturday morning for your grade to allow time for the system to update.

  18. My Pledge to Students • I will trust you until you give me reason to do otherwise. • I will respect you and work with you to solve problems. • I will promptly correct and offer feedback on your work. • I will work with you to meet learning goals. • I will offer extra help and alternative assessments should you require them.
