  4. Monitor the Server • Monitor actual db server activity • Gather data • Help determine what data means • Track system behavior • Measure storage space • Buffer activity and I/O performance • Memory management • Provide data collection

  5. Data Collection • Sampling: measure system activity at random or predetermined intervals • Event driven: trigger a signal to a counter when an event takes place

  6. Tools Evaluation • Ensure good, consistent performance • Detect problem • Differentiate systemwide and one user problem • Provide sufficient details • Options on how much tracing needed • Easy-to-use interfaces
