  1. Systems Administration Ch. 24 By Nancy Sunarga CSSE 541 Fall 2000

  2. Service Level Agreements • Availability • Target % of system availability • Response time • Schedule for completion of batch jobs • Currency of data • Disaster recovery measures

  3. Aspects of data quality • Currency • Accuracy • Completeness • Timeliness • Security • Retention

  4. Monitor the Server • Monitor actual db server activity • Gather data • Help determine what data means • Track system behavior • Measure storage space • Buffer activity and I/O performance • Memory management • Provide data collection

  5. Data Collection • Sampling: measure system activity at random or predetermined intervals • Event driven: trigger a signal to a counter when an event takes place

  6. Tools Evaluation • Ensure good, consistent performance • Detect problem • Differentiate systemwide and one user problem • Provide sufficient details • Options on how much tracing needed • Easy-to-use interfaces

  7. Tools Evaluation (cont’d) • Customize reporting • Provide tutorials and help functions • Operate on the remote servers and local ones • Can support heterogeneous DBMS products • Can alerts or signal when problem occur

  8. Storage Management • Largest portion of cost • Placement, movement, backup, purging, archiving data

  9. Key Success Factors - Storage Mgmt • Efficiency • Reliability • Able to control costs • Able to manage storage efficiently • Able to predict future needs for add’l performance and capacity

  10. Storage criteria • Easy, flexible scalability • Flexible to connect multiple servers to a single storage pool • High-speed cache and parallel processors • Able to move data in case of disk errors • Redundant components to minimize downtime • On-line maintenance • Diagnostics that can help prevent service outages

  11. Network Management • For different kind of platforms • Simple network management protocol (SNMP)

  12. SNMP Tools features • Distributed console support • Heterogeneous relational db support • Scalability • Interfaces for alerts • Security features • Tracking of network utilization in real time and in summary reports

  13. SNMP Tools features (cont’d) • Measurement of network response time • Graphical display of key measurements • Troubleshooting assistance • Identification of underutilized and overutilized resources • Optimization tool to improve overall performance

  14. Security Management • Access to the system • Application-level security • Database access
