  2. I The Election of 1960 • Sputnik I launch, U-2 incident, & Soviet-Cuba alignment  US losing Cold War? • Democrat= Kennedy (mass) v. Republican = Nixon • Similar positions on policy but TV & CIVIL RIGHTS helped JFK win • PRO= Kennedy young, handsome & charismatic • CON= youngest pres., inexperienced, & catholic • TV Debate on Sept. 26, 1970 • “Kennedy was quick, aggressive, & cool…Nixon nervous, perspiring profusely”

  3. MLK sentenced to 4 months hard labor for traffic violation • JFK & RFK get MLK out on bail pending appeal  votes form Af. Amer. Community • JFK takes stance against communism w/ policy of FLEXIBLE RESPONSE  Special forces AKA Green Berets

II Crisis over Cuba • Fidel Castro takes over Cuba  communist and receives help from SU • Rode on promise of democracy but after takeover took over oil refineries & broke up private farms  exile in Miami & counter rev. movement • Eisenhower allows CIA training of Cuban exiles to invade & overthrow Castro • JFK approves plans as pres. & they land in Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) • US air strike did not take out Cuban AF & distraction force didn’t reach beach  failed Bay of Pigs invasion

Khrushchev promises to defend Cuba  begin sending weapons to Cuba • U2 planes discover Soviet missile bases in Cuba • JFK TV address warns that Soviet attack would mean all out US retaliation • nuclear war averted when JFK quarantines Cuba blocking soviet ships from reaching island  soviet ships halt at sea  SU agrees to remove bases in return for US promise to not invade Cuba

III the Berlin Crisis & Easing Tensions • Refugees flee from East (communist) Germany to West (Democratic) Germany • East German troops build concrete wall (Berlin Wall) on border between E & W Berlin • Guarded Berlin wall almost ended the SU problem of fleeing refugees • Aggravated Cold War tensions • JFK announces Hot Line – instant com. Between US & SU in crisis • Later agreed to Limited Test Ban Treaty bared Nuke testing in atmosphere
